About Residence:

Source: Historic Ashland County, A collection of local accounts about people, places and events from 1812-1987 by Betty Plank, Page 185.

This house at 719 W. Main St., is vacant now, and a "For Sale" sign hangs from a post in the front yard.
But turn he calendar back nearly 100 years to 1891 when George Michael Knapp, a cooper of Germany ancestry, and his wife, the former Ann Sara Downs, whose family came from England, purchased the home for $800 from the Markle family.
No one knows exactly when the house was built. An 1874 map shows the Markle family living at this location. Some believe the house was built about the time of the Civil War. The original wavy window panes, plank flooring, and especially the way the back yard slopes down tho the creek that flows beside the cemetery are reminiscent of the Thomas A. Edison birthplace in Milan, which was built in 1845.
Margery Webster, a granddaughter, has fond memories of the original kitchen located in the basement which was at ground level in the rear of the home. The window looked out on the well with its cedar bucket and the inviting back yard.
She said the tranquil scene was sometimes interrupted by flocks of crows which nested in the pine trees. Young boys shot them and turned their bounty in to a local law enforcement agency which gave them a penny for each dead bird. Another reminder of the past is the rusting Myers pump which can still be found behind the house.
Two major changes in the house came along with progress. One end of the upstairs hall was sectioned off to put in a bathroom. Plumbing was brought in at the corner since the tripl-thick brick walls were hard to penetrate. Another structural change occurred when central heating was installed. The steps and porch entrance were moved to the side to allow space for the new furnace.
The Knapp family included four daughters and a son. One of the daughters, Lucy McDowell; was widowed when her son was only 4 years old. A talented musician, she played both the piano and the organ and supported heer son by playing at one time or another at each of the local picture theaters: The Princess, the Palace, the Rex, or the Opera House.
It was her task to select the appropriate music to express fear, joy, love, hate or whatever emotion the actors were trying to portray. After "talkies" replaced the silent films, she went to work at the Home Co. She died about five years ago, and the house was sold and became a rental property.
Her son Rex, who now lives in Cincinnati, has his grandfather's cooper tools. Other grandchildren include Mrs. Webster and Ruth Stahl of Ashland, Pauline Gossett, George, and Emory Marble and Sara Jane Lovell, all of Florida.
