AGDALENA KNAPP:
Great Grandma Magdalena Knapp Marble cared for three generations of children. Magdalena had 6 children,
Eleven grand-children; 1. James Orland "Jim" Gosset, 2. JoAnn Gossett, 3. Duane Bradshaw Marble, 4. Sybil Annette Marble, 5. Lorin Eldred "Larry" Marble, 6. Susan Marble Stahl, 7. Margaret Ann "Peggy" Stahl 8. Mary Elizabeth Stahl 9. Marilynn Kay "Lynn" Marble 10. Dann Lee Marble 11. Michael Alan Marble. At the time of her death, she had 30 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

A visit or stay for a child at great-grandma's house often included fig newton cookies and sing along at the piano, which she played. I personally recall two tunes; "Bringing in the Sheep" and "Chop Sticks". Also, great-grandma had taken some of her great-grandchildren to water the flowers and care for the gravesites of relatives in the Ashland Cemetery. Two houses West of her house, there was a break in the cemetery fence line, where two trees had grown very closely together. An individual could squeeze themselves between the two trees and gain access to the cemetery. The closes gravesites to this access point belong to Magdalena's grandparents; Michael Knapp and wife Magdalene Milheim and the gravesite of a great-grandmother, Magdalena Coleman, (mother of Michael).

Most of all, I remember when great-grandma came to baby-sit, she would often read bedtime stories from Children's Readers Digest.

________News Article appearing Ashland Times-Gazette, after Marriage on June 25, 1903._________

______________________"A LADY TRANSFORMED INTO MARBLE"___________________________

A young gentleman of Ashland this morning took a "Knapp" and through the instrumentality of Reverend J. Cronenberger of the Disciple church, the young gentleman's girl was instantly turned into "Marble". Now that may seem miraculously strange but it only demonstrates the power of Ashland's ministers of the gospel.
To be more explicit Duane P. Marble, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ferd Marble, was united in marriage at 7:00 o'clock to Miss Lena Knapp, the accomplished and pleasing daughter of M. and Mrs. Michael Knapp, the ceremony taking place at the home of the bride's parents on West Main Street, and Reverend J. Cronenberger officiating.
Mr. and Mrs. Duane P. Marble are popular young people of splendid report and their hosts of friends extend the very best wishes and congratulations. They left over the Erie morning train for New Carlisle and Dayton to spend their honeymoon. A few of their friends got "wind" of the marriage, which was supposed to be secret outside of the immediate families, and showers of rice were administer as the happy couple boarded the train.

Excerpts from Kenton Maurice Marble's Diary

Born: March 12, 1912 in Ashland, Ohio

Kenton Maurice Marble served in the United States Navy from December 5, 1942 to October 10, 1945. He became a Hospital Apprentice Second Class on January 16, 1942 at the Hospital Corps School, Portsmouth, Virginia. In 1943, Kent was a Pharmacist 2-c (second class), at U.S. Naval Hospital, Bainbridge, Maryland. Kenton kept a Diary from February 1945 to July 21 1945 (1st book) and from July 21 1945 to October 10, 1945 (2nd book) while serving on the U.S.S. LST 284. This diary is now in the possession of Terry Lawrence Patterson.

Note: LST stands for Landing Ship Tank. A common nickname was Large Slow Target. With the ship's slow speed (12 knots max) and her valuable cargo of troops, tanks, and ammo, she was an attractive target for the Japanese planes. She had only one big gun.

12 May 1945 ..Jap Air Raid 14th ... Jap Air Raid 28th... Air Raid 11 June ... Suicide plane shot down about fifty feet from our port side. 12 June...Expecting Typhoon. 21st...Anchored off Leyte
22 July 1945 ..Mary dearest sweetheart, sometimes I believe I go mad just thinking of you. I can't look at the moon or stars without wondering if you are looking at them and think the same as I.
23 July 1945 ..Native girls on the beach, nearby, trying to entice the boys ashore for "pom-pom" for the price of twenty to thirty pesos, ($10-$15). Girls stand on the beach raising arms, and shaking it, lifting dresses, wiggling, or shaking their bodies. Very disgusting.
24 July ..Back to old Anchorage(Alaska). Nothing New. 27th .. Darling Mary, I miss you
31st ...same old thing

1 August ..New Month.. Starting it off with more waiting. I could even welcome an Air-Raid or Invasion! No mail for 3 days..I miss your letters, Mary.

10 August .. Movie at 20:15 named "Animal Kingdom" Word came over Radio of Japan offering to Surrender. Couldn't hardly see the Movies. Overcome with emotion and joy. Wondered if you had heard that wonderful news too. Rockets, Flares, and Shell Bursts, like a 4th of July Celebration
23 September ..Arrived Tokyo Bay--no word on discharges
26 September .. Ship is the first to leave Japan unescorted
27 September .. Can't hardly believe I am Really on my way home for good. Thank God for letting me go back.

Kent ran the "Tennessee Tree Service" P.O. Box 5 in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Kent (as a stepfather) with wife, Mary Edna raised Duane Bradshaw (from age 8) and Sybil Annette (from age 4). Kent and Mary took many childhood photos of Duane and Sybil. Kent and Mary helped Duane & Thera in their early marriage years by giving them luxuries like a portable TV and providing necessities such as coal to keep warm. Kent and Mary gave Duane's 3 sons a swing set. Kenton Maurice Marble and Mary Edna Bailey were married October 19, 1937 in Columbus, Mississippi. Kenton died of a heart attack at age 48 on January 15, 1960. Kent and Mary are buried a Liberty Church Cemetery, Gordon, AL.

  Notes for MARY EDNA BAILEY:
Mary Edna, the youngest daughter of Robert Bradshaw BAILEY, was affectionately nicknamed "Red" by her siblings for her bright red hair. She had a domineering personality, which required a lot of attention. Mary also displayed that Irish temper (or was it the red hair); she often spoke in very strong language when angered. Yet, Mary was a beautiful loving individual, whom two Marble men could not resist.
Mary went to college in Selma, Alabama to be a legal secretary. During her college years she went to Pine Hill and Yellow Bluff Campgrounds (Wilcox County, Alabama), where Sam Hood Ball had a cabin.

The marriage of Mary Edna to Lawrence Duane MARBLE:

In the late 1920's, Lawrence Duane Marble, a salesman was travelling through Alabama distributing magazine literature. Edna's sister, Mattie Gertrude answered the door and talked to Lawrence. Mary Edna was in the back room and could hear the northern accent. She came into the front room and said, "Who is this Dam Yankee?" They were married 12 June 1928 in Reform, Alabama. They moved to Ashland, Ohio where she worked in a hat shop in 1937. Mary Edna often drew sketches of ladies fashions of the time.

Grandmother Mary Edna:

Mary had many affectionate nicknames from her 8 grandsons: Nanny, Granny, and Mustang Mary. She would arrive in her Ford Mustang and in a loud, long southern draw, she would say to her grandsons, "Give me some sugar, my darling". Full of life and love, she always gave a hearty welcome with big hugs. Mary's wrists and fingers would be adorn with bracelets and jewelry; wearing as many as ten rings at once. I counted them! Even though she smoked Sara toga cigarettes, she had perfect set of white teeth, which a doctor mistook as dentures. Another childhood memory of Grandmother Mary, was her delight in her flower garden and for the butterflies that flew in it.
