1302 Descendants of Richard Roberts & Elizabeth Lynden Montgomery

3. CELIA2 ROBERTS (RICHARD1) died 1822 in Granville County, North Carolina. She married JOHN SIHON "SION" PARRISH December 09, 1808 in Granville County, North Carolina, son of CLABORN PARRISH and JUDITH. He was born 1789 in Granville County, North Carolina, and died March 04, 1848 in Maple Creek, Carroll County, Tennessee.

Notes for C
ELIA ROBERTS:
Other spellings: Cecilia

Celia Roberts BIRTH AGE; Celia Roberts is a child of Richard Roberts and she was born in 1772 the year of Richard's LWT. She would be 17 years older, (most probable, actually older) than "Sion" born 1789, (birth year according to most Parrish researchers). Is Celia Roberts the daughter of Richard Roberts or is there some other relationship, (like granddaughter)?\

Sihon Parrish married Celia Robards (Roberts) by reason of issuance of marriage bond in
Granville County, 9 Dec 1808, with George Robarts, Bondsman & W. M. Sneed, wit. It is also possible that he was married again to Sarah Adams, 22 November 1823, marriage bond in Granville County being issued as follows Sion Parrish & Sarah Adams, 22 November 1823; Francis H. Worsham, bondsman; Jas. M. Wiggins, wit.

ILLIAM WHARTON:
Other spellings: Whortons

William Wharton appeared to live on the western border of Granville Co. in the mid to late 1700's. At the time, Orange county had just been formed (1752) from part of Granville Co. Several districts on the western edge of Granville and northeastern edge of Orange County are variously listed in either county. The area around Deep Creek, where William owned land at one time, is presently in Person Co. (formed in 1791), and very near Cub creek where Richard Roberts lived. Richard was the father of Jane Roberts, William's wife.
The earliest record of William in Granville Co. is a listing in 1756 in the Granville Co. deed books. Apparently he worked frequently as a sworn chain carrier with the surveyor, William Churton. William's signature appears on many deeds along with that of other sworn chain carriers and the surveroy in charge.

1756 (June 18) - William Wharton helped survey land for Richard Roberts on Davis Creek in Granville County, NC.

William Whorton appears in the 1790 census in South Carolina. The upstate of South Carolina was opened in 1777 for settlement and was called the 96th district. It was soon divided into the Pendleton District, Greenville County, Spartanburg County, and others. William lived in Greenville County. Benjamin Whorton, said to be his son, lived in Anderson County with was part of the Pendleton District.

1790 - 1790 Federal Census, Greenville County, South Carolina:
William Whorton (1 male/head of household, no males under 16, 4 females (wife Jane and daughers), no nergoes.

  iv.   JOHN WHARTON, b. April 05, 1758.
  Notes for JOHN WHARTON:
Enlisted during 1778 while residing in the 96th district and served under Capts John Wallace and Joseph Tolls as a minuteman. He later served under Capt. John Wilds and was in a number of skirmishes against the Tories. He also served under a Col. Hayes and assisted in burying Hayes. He also served at one point under Gen. Greene. During 1779 he was assigned the duty of thrashing, cleaning and delivering grain to the Army.

He later moved to Georgia.

  v.   BENJAMIN WHARTON, b. 1760, North Carolina; d. 1848, Georgia.
  Notes for BENJAMIN WHARTON:
Benjamin Whorton appears in the 1790 census in the Pendleton district. He and a Samuel Whorton are listed in the land grant records of SC, but these have not been researched yet.

Benjamin appears to have moved to Jackson County, GA in about 1801/1802. He sold 200 acres of land in SC in 1797, 200 acres in December, 1801 and 150 acres in December of 1802. He is listed in the Jackson County Tax list in 1801 in the Towsend district. In 1810 Benjamin and his sons appear to have owned a large amount of land in Jackson County and the district in which they lived was named Whorton district (the name changed by 1817 to J. Hemphill district). He was given land grants of 800 acres in Jackson County in 1817 and another 255 acres in Hall County in 1830.

Notes for J
AMES BRIDGENS:
1762 Granville Co., N. C. tax lists (NCGSJ Aug. 1986) Country Line District (upper NW section of county, including Aarons Creek and Grassy Creek) name no. 51. William Bridges (head) including James Bridges-total 2 whites

James Bridges married the widow Lydia (Roberts) Lashley between 1761 and early 1764, in the Grassy Creek community of Granville Co., N.C. It is not known if James had an earlier wife. James & Lydia had a married life together of approximately 26 to 29 years before they were listed in the 1790 York Co. S. C. census. This census creates the appearance of their having two sons and five daughters still at home. From other records, these sons were Richard & James. From the 1800 census for Lydia, the last two daughters were listed b. ca 1785/90, so if the last two daughters were born ca 1785 and 1787, there may have been a child bearing period of ca 1761/64 to 1787, or 23 to 26 years. Since we found 7 children at home in 1790, based on 2 years between children, there is a mathematical possibility there may have been as many as 4 to 6 more children, b. ca 1761/64 to 1772 who left home prior to the 1790 census.

  ii.   RICHARD3 BRIDGENS.
