1. SPENCER¹ ROUS(E) was born 07 May 1843 in Greenup Co, KY, and died 03 July 1912 in Clarksburg, KY. He married CORA LOVELL BERRY 03 March 1878 in Cabell Co, KY, daughter of Philo Berry and Mary Wallace.

Notes
Described by his son, Samuel, as a "very strong, hard-working" man. Once, on a bet, he lifted a barrel of salt and placed it in a wagon. While helping to raise a log home, he lifted one end of a log while it took two or three men to lift the other end. His death certificate states "hard labor" as a complication of his death.

On 3 July 1912, with his family gathered around him, he raised up in his bed, waved good-bye to everyone in the room, said "to all," and died.

The July 1912 Vanceburg Sun gives his obituary as:
"Died at his home, near Clarksburg, July 8, Spence Rouse. He was 60 years of age. Mr. Rouse had been sick for some time with dropsy. He was a member of the Methodist Church. He was taken to Mt. Zion for burial. His many friends regret very much the loss of Mr. Rouse, as he was a devoted husband and loving father. He leaves a wife, three sons, two daughters, two brothers, four sisters and a host of friends to mourn his loss. The Lord said, 'Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.'"
