"Hannah in her affidavit for a war pension states: 'that she was married in Turkey Run Church in the County of Fauquier, by old Parson Criag, and hath lived in said County ever since.' He left a will and names all the children except the 10th whom Hannah was carrying at the time the will was written. the witnesses to Peter's will were Aruthur Gladstone and Mary Shaw(she was his mother, and second wife of his father, John, who later married John Shaw in 1791). Arthur Gladstone was Peter's Brother-in-law, having married in 1786, to Susannah Hitt. He enlisted in Fauquier Co., VA. for three years under Capt Elias Edmunds and fought at Camden under Baron DeKalb. During the battle of Camden, SC, (Aug 1780) He was captured and made a prisoner. He was wounded by a cavalry charge having been slashed by a sword on each arm and side. he was after wards exchanged and served to the end of the war. Hannah was living at Leeds Manor, Fauquier Co., VA. in 1841. She received a pension in 1843."

"You might be interested to learn also that a group of Hitt desc. (variously connected) met earlier this month to install a US govt. tombstone marker for Peter Hitt, at the small family graveyard where Peter Hitt raised his family.
The new stone joins the original one, place by his family, with a still fine inscription on it, AND a SAR marker that was placed a few years ago. We are working on clearing the entire graveyard (which had been totally overgrown) and will fence it so it can be maintained. The present owner of the property (no relation) has been very cooperative. Hannah (James) Hitt is also buried here but(so far as we know) none of the children were.
The Hitt log cabin is still standing tho not in reconstructable condition. One sheltered side seems almost new, thos The farm (no longer farmed) is located on the north side of the Rappahanock River where it is corssed by Rt. 645. Rt. 645 goes north from just west of Amissville, VA. the graveyard is at the top fo a hill on the right side of the road; an overgrown lane goes off the road just after the bridge. If you are ever out this way, you might want to visit."
