Notes for A
NDREW KINCANNON:
Via notes by Doris Hopper 4-18-00 <dmh_001@yahoo.com>

"Southwest Virginia Families" by David B. Trimble pages 211-212
"He settled on the Little Holston Branch of the Middle Fork of the Holston River in Botetourt(now Washington) Co., VA, in 1771; he had 400 acres surveyed on September 1, 1781, and 361 acres surveyed on June 3, 1783, subsequently receiving grants to these tracts. (Washington Co., Va, Surveys; Botetourt Co., VA tas lists 1772) Besides operating a plantation on these lands, he was a blacksmith and gunsmith; he traveled Kentucky very early and later claimed to have made the first horseshoes in Kentucky. He was tall, muscular, sober, industrious and moral, although not a member of the church. (Lyman C. Draper, "Kings Mountain and Its Heros" [Cincinatti: Peter G. Thomson, 1881], p. 409: Draper Mss. 14DD77)"
"Andrew Kincannon took an active part in the American Revolution: in 1777 he was acting armorer to the Virginia troopers stationed at Long Island on the Holston, and the same year he was appointed an ensign and then a Lieutenant in the Washington Co., Militia, being stationed at Stone Mill on Deer Creek. In 1780 he raised and commanded a company at King's Mountain under Gen. William Campbell, whom he did not consider a good officer. After the battle, Kincannon tried to stop the American troops from firing at the British after they had surrendered, and he objected ot Campbell's hanging his prisoners. A British officer, Capt. Samuel Ryerson, surrendered to Kincannon, who later explained that he was so excited that he merely invited Ryerson to sit down on the ground, and the two men began talking. (Draper, pp. 409, 286-287)"
"After the Revolution, Kincannon received several large land grants; on June 20, 1781, Virginia granted him three tracts totalling 1,800 acres on Silver Creek in Lincoln Co., KY, and on October 10, 1783, North Carolina granted him two tracts of 226 acres and 483 acres in Hickory Cove on Big Creek in Sullivan Co., TN, and 640 acres on the West fork of Mill Creek in Davidson Co., TN. He also acquired 122 acres on Crooked Creek in Grayson Co., VA, selling 60 acres of it to William Kenney in 1819. He was a member of the VIrginia House of Delegates in 1785. (Willard Rouse Jillson, "Kentucky Entries and Deeds" [Louisville: The Standard Printing Company, 1925], p. 44; Sullivan Co., TN, Deed Bk. 1, pp 81, 90; Grayson Co., VA, tax lists, 1797-1814, Deed bk. 4, p. 60.)"
"About 1792, Andrew Kincannon moved to Tom's Creek in Surry Co., North Carolina, where he operated several iron mines. On March 24, 1795, he and his wife Catherine sold 311 acres of their 361 acre grant in Washington Co., VA, to Daniel Perkins for 1,000 pounds and gave the remaining 50 acres to their son James; they sold the remainder of their Washington Co., lands to William Stewart. Kincannon bought land in Surry Co., NC, from John Dunagen, Henry Burcham, John Stephens, James Fitzgerald, and John Wright; the state of NC granted him 3,156 acres in four tracts to enable him to develop an iron industry for the state. (Washington Co., VA, Deed Bk. 1, pp. 402, 403, Bk. 3, p. 568: Surry Co., NC, Deeds E, 203, F, 81, G, 262, I, 85, N, 293, R, 234)"
"Andrew Kincannon began selling some of his lands when on November 13, 1805, he sold 100 acres on Rocky Creek to Joseph Pennington for 25 pounds, and on September 2, 1815, he sold 50 acres on Chesnut Ridge in Surry Co., to Benjamin Taylor for $50.00; on August 15, 1816, he sold Thomas Puckett 20 acres on Little Flat Shoal Creek for $20.00, and on July 12, 1824, he gave his daughter, Elizabeth Armstrong, his interest in one of his grants. On July 12, 1829, he also sold much of his Kentucky lands, and he died November 20, 1829, in Surry Co., NC (Surry Co., NC, Deeds L, 72, N, 189, 325, X, 263, Letter from John L.l Worth.....: Bible records belonging to Mary Stephenson.)"
"On March 5 to 16, 1831, the widow and children of Andrew Kincannon gave John H. Hanna power of attorney to sell his remaining lands in Kentucky; on January 12, 1834, Harrison Blanton bought 106 acres on the Elkhorn River in Franklin Co., KY, for $1,040.00 Catherine Kincannon died in Surry Co., NC in 1834, and on November 23, 1836, Peter Simmons bought the Surry Co., ironworks and mill and land on the north side of Tom's Creek for $2000.00. EORGE KINCANNON:
"They (George and Ann) settled in Tennessee near Big Springs, Meigs county in 1807 where they both died in the 1830's or 1840's."
--The Kinnisons Famiy History--1969 pg 5

"He is mentioned in his father's will and also in another record dated February 16, 1796. Deed Book "1:, County court House, Abingdon, VA. James Kincannon and John Stewart executors of the estate of Francis Kincannon, deceased, to George Kincannon, 100 pounds and 390 acres of land on a branch of the Middle Fork of the Holston River. He was a Private in the Virginia Militia, under the command of Colonel William Campbell and was in the Battle of Kings Mountain, which occurred near the town of York, South Carolina, on October 7, 1780. He made a statement on September 24, 1832, when he was living in McMinn County, Tn, and it certified that he was with Andrew Evans in the Battle of Kings Mountain. This was for pension purposes. (Archives at Kings Mountain Military Park, York, SC.) (DAR magazine, Kings Mountain article, Feb. 1965, page 132.) A reference to George's service in the American Revolutionary War is also found in the "History of Crawford and Richland Counties, Wisconsin" published in 1884, page 1226."

"Later branches of the family moved to Bradley, Hamilton and McMinn as they were being formed at that time. George and Ann lived at Big Spring and it was here that John K. operated a ferry boat on the Hiwasee River for many years. The U.S. Census Reports for Tenn. in 1850, lists many Kincannons living in those Counties, thus the family had wonderfully multiplied since the arrival of the colonial ancestor in 1735.
The children of George and Ann are as follows:"
