Notes for C
HARLES MCKINNEY:
Charles McKinney was born about 1725 possibly in Essex County, Virginia. He resided in Cumberland and Lunenburg (later Charlotte) Counties, Virginia.

Charles McKinney's issue by his first wife (name unknown) were Thomas, Stephen, Charles Jr., William, and Josiah McKinney. He also had an additional three sons by his first wife that were killed in the Revolutionary War.

The earliest record of Charles McKinney is in Cumberland County, Virginia Deed Book 2 where on 3 October 1752 he purchased 200 acres for a sum of 13 pounds from Michael and Ann Rowland. A land grant from George II, King of England, for 124 acres in Cumberland County, Virginia on 16 August 1756 is recorded in Book 33, page 254 of the land office in Richmond, Virginia. In this grant he is listed as "Charles Maccenney." He sold the above 124 acres on 22 October 1761 to William Samson for the sum of 12 pounds (Deed book 3, page 239) and the original 200 acres were sold to Simond Rowland for 20 pounds on 1 December 1761 (Deed book 3, page 272).

Charles then purchased 75 acres of land in Lunenburg (part which later became Charlotte County) Virginia from Nathaniel Christian for 80 pounds (Lunenburg County Deed book 7, page 349) on 12 March 1762 and moved his family to his new land about this time.

A 1782 Virginia census and tax report lists Charles as a resident of Charlotte County and being the head of a family of 7 with 8 slaves. His sons Charles Jr. and William are also listed as heads of families in this same county in 1782.

Charles deeded his 247 acres in Charlotte County to his son Charles Jr. on 1 November 1784 for 210 pounds (Deed book 5).

Charles moved to Harrod's Run, Mercer County, Kentucky, via the Cumberland Gap between 1 Nov 1784 and 1 Aug 1785 and we find recorded in Lincoln County under date 1 Aug 1785 a consent for his daughter, Elizabeth, to marry John Lawrence signed by Charles McKinney and attested to by Stephen McKinney and William Wilson. Charles "McKinny" is listed on a petition to build a tobacco inspection station house in Mercer County, Kentucky, 26 October 1786 and Mercer County, Kentucky records indicate that on 28 JUL 1789 persons were appointed to view a way for altering the road around Charles McKinney's plantation so that wagons could pass through.

Charlotte County, Virginia records have a Charles McKinney as surety for two marriages: Ezekiah Ford & Anne Garn/rett (daughter of James) 16 Dec 1787 (Charlotte Co Mar Bond p 113) and Peter Ross & Lucy Carwiles (daughter of William) 25 Dec 1788 (" p 202).

The 1790 Virginia Census for Charlotte County listed a Charles McKinney with 8 slaves; Charles McKinney Jr. with 4 slaves; William McKinney with 4 slaves; another William McKinney with no slaves; Peter McKinney with 1 slave. One of Charles McKinney's sons was named Daniel Fuquay McKinney and he may have been named for their neighbors, the Fuqua family.

The 1795 Mercer County, Kentucky Tax List has Charles owning 17 slaves, 12 horses, and 43 cattle. Only two people in the county owned more slaves than Charles McKinney and only four owned more horses and seven owned more cattle.

Charles "M'Kinney" is listed as living near Danville in Mercer County in a notice about a stud horse in The Kentucky Gazette 15 February 1797.

Charles McKinney died on 17 March 1798 in Mercer County, Kentucky, and on 22 May 1798, his will was proved and administration was granted to his son "Rany"(Rane) McKinney on the same date.

From the type of land grant Charles McKinney received in 1756 it would seem that he was born in America not Scotland, but we have not yet discovered who his parents were.

            ORIGIN OF THE NAME "MCKINNEY"

"Mac" or "Mc" means "son of" in Scotland and "McKinney" is "son of Kenneth or Cionaodh" and means "fire sprung." The earliest record of the name McKinney goes back to the the MACINNES who lived in Movern in the Highlands of Scotland. The traditional history of the MacDonald clan refers to the MACINNES as earlier inhabitants of the land. One of the earliest written records of the name McKinney is of "Kennauch MaKyny" who was present at pleas held at Dull in Atholl in 1264.

McKinney is a sept of the McKinnon clan and an older form of the name is Fingon. Before 1200 the McKinnon clan was located on the Island of Arran just off the Southwest Lowlands. It was probably at this time that the clan had its closest relationship to its sept McKinney which was located across the Channel from the mainland of Galloway. George Fraser Black in his Surnames of Scotland states that the various spellings of McKinney (MacKinney, McKenney, etc.) are all of Galwegian (Galloway) origin. According to Black the largest concentration of people named McKinney before the end of the 17th century was in Galloway so this is probably where Charles McKinney's ancestors had lived.

Notes for M
ARIANNE CHASTAIN:
Marianne Chastain was christened 17 May 1738 in Manakin Town, Goochland County, Virginia. In her father's will, Marianne was listed as Marianne "Makinne."

The first record of Marianne being the (second) wife of Charles McKinney is her signature on a deed recorded in Cumberland County, Virginia on 1 December 1761. She raised five stepsons and had seven known children by Charles McKinney. The last written record of Marianne is her signature on a deed recorded in Charlotte County, Virginia on 1 November 1784. She died before 1796 in Mercer County, Kentucky.
