Notes for S
TEPHEN MCKINNEY:
Charles McKinney's sons helped Daniel Boone cut the trail through the Cumberland Gap from Virginia to Kentucky and settled near Crab Orchard in Lincoln County. Later Stephen McKinney went further down the wilderness trail and established a fort which he called McKinney's Station on Little Barren River in Green County (now Barren County), Kentucky. In the Adair County Review, Vol 6 #4, Winter 1992, is an article on McKinney Station. The Lyman Draper Manuscripts, volume 9-J, George Rogers Clark Collection, pages 224 and 225 has a report of an Indian raid on their fort. Early in 1792 nine Indians came to McKinney's Station. They killed Stephen and wounded 1 of his daughters and took a stepson prisoner. David Janes drove off the Indians and prevented them from scalping Stephen McKinney. The stepson later returned. A guardian was appointed for Stephen's minor children, Charles and Mary Ann. The guardian sued Rane McKinney, Stephen's brother, as executor of Charles McKinney's estate in the name of the heirs of Stephen McKinney in Lincoln County, Kentucky, in 1800.

On 23 January 1793 administration in the estate of Stephen McKinney was granted to "Rany" McKinney (Mercer County Kentucky Will Book #1, pages 93 and 171).

He married (1) TABITHA VARDAMAN 10 May 1787 in Mercer Co, Kentucky3, daughter of JOHN VARDAMAN and ELIZABETH MORGAN. He married (2) SABRA ELIZABETH VARDAMAN 13 January 1797 in Lincoln Co, Kentucky, daughter of JOHN VARDAMAN and ELIZABETH MORGAN.

Notes for R
ANE MCKINNEY:
Both of Rane's marriages are listed in Kentucky Marriages, Early to 1800 edited by Jordan Dodd, page 144. He is listed as Rane "McKenney" in his marriage to "Sabre Vardeman" and as "Raney McKeyney" in his marriage to "Tabiltha Vardeman."

Rane bought 100 acres from John Coyler in Lincoln County Kentucky 18 August 1789 (Deed Book A, pages 411-412). He bought 680 acres on Little Barren River in Military County, Kentucky, 1 Sep 1791 (Filson Club Publications, vol 33).

Rane was granted administration of his brother Stephen McKinney's estate as requested by his relict (widow) Catherine McKinney on 23 January 1793 (Mercer County Will Book 1, pages 171-173). The 1795 Mercer County Kentucky Tax List has "Reaney" McKinney owning no slaves, horses, or cattle. Rane sold 100 acres of land in Lincoln County Kentucky to Achilles Ballinger 24 April 1797 (Deed Book C, pages 264-265). On 22 May 1798 he was appointed Administrator for his father's estate (Mercer County Kentucky Records, volume 1, page 501, and Will Book 2, page 190) and inherited 300 acres in Logan County, Kentucky. This land adjoined the land of his deceased brother, Stephen. On 22 January 1799 Rane was appointed overseer of the road from Danville to Harrods Run as it leads to Harrodsburg, in place of Godfrey Smith (Mercer County Kentucky Records, volume 1, page 522).

"Reany McKenney" appears on the 1800 Tax list for Mercer County, Kentucky.

A list of letters left at the post office in Danville, Kentucky, lists Rane "M'Kinney" in the 9 July 1802 issue of The Kentucky Gazette. A notice regarding the estate sale by "Rainey M'Kinny," executor of the estate of Charles "M'Kinny," is in the 14 December 1802 issue.

"Raney McKiney" and William McKiney, Senior, are listed as legatees in the will of Elizabeth Wetherford written 28 November 1812 and proven in April of 1813 (Adair County, Kentucky Will Book B, page 108). "Rainey McKiney" is listed as a purchaser in the Hugart estate sale, January 1817 (Book B, page 228).

Rane purchased 3 parcels of land in Wayne County Kentucky on 27 March 1821: 200 acres from James Stone, 70 acres from Roger Oatts, and an additional 105 acres from James Stone (Deed Book C, pages 225-227 and 231-232). He bought 220 acres from Batholomew Haden in Wayne County 5 July 1823 (Deed Book C, page 445) and 50 acres from Jesse Wilson 28 July 1833 (Deed Book F, pages 230-231).

Rane operated a ferry on the Cumberland River about 8 miles north of Monticello, Wayne County, Kentucky (County Court Records, September 1823). The boat landing was known as Robertsport and in 1845 a site for a town to be named McKinneyville was laid out. This effort to establish a town failed in 1848. His farm is now underwater (Lake Cumberland).

He sold acreage received by land patent from the Commonwealth of Kentucky to Archibald McBeath in Wayne County 31 August 1836 (Deed Book G, pages 299-300).

There was an 1849 sale of Rane McKinney's estate and he is mentioned in Kentucky Ancestors, volume 23-24, page 261, and in Cemetery Records of Mercer County Kentucky, volume 1, page 111.

Notes for T
ABITHA VARDAMAN:
Tabitha and Sabra Vardaman were the daughters of John (born in 1745 in Virginia) and Sabra Elizabeth Franklyn Vardaman and the grand-daughters of William Vardaman of Lunenburg County, Virginia. Surety for Tabitha & Rane McKinney's marriage was Amaziah Vardiman and consent was given by John & Elizabeth Morgan Vardiman for their daughter.   Notes for THOMAS FREEMAN MCKINNEY:
Thomas Freeman McKinney was born 1 November 1801 in Christian County, Kentucky. He moved at an early age to Randolph County, Missouri. As a youth he entered the Sante Fe trade, carrying calico and small hardware via pack mules to Santa Fe and returning to Missouri with silver, gold, horses and mules. He later traded along a route between Chihuahua, Mexico, and Natchitoches, Louisiana. In 1831 he married his first wife Mrs. Nancy Wilson of Nacogdoches. While keelboating cotton to the mouth of the Neches River he noticed to six huge Indian burial mounds at present-day Port Neches, Texas, which he thought could withstand seasonal river flooding. On his return to Nacogdoches he applied to Lorenzo de Zavala for a league of land (4,428 acres) and on 23 April 1831 he received the first Mexican land grant in Jefferson County. McKinney's Bluff became the first name of Port Neches, Texas. He never lived on this land and in 1837 he sold two-thirds of it to Joseph Grigsby.

He concentrated on his plantation at Quintana near the mouth of the Brazos River and in 1834 he joined with Samuel May Williams and established the largest firm in early Texas, McKinney-Williams and Co. It became Texas' largest merchandising and shipping firm and first banking institution. At one time they owned one-fifth of Galveston Island.

He was called "Father of the Texas Navy" and he helped finance the Texas Revolution against Mexico. Altogether McKinney and Williams advanced more than $100,000.00 of company funds to the Texas Republic for which they were repaid in landscript totalling 108,000 acres of the public domain. Land speculation soon became their primary business and at one time they held certificates exceeding 1.5 million acres. The steamer Laura fired the first shot of the Texas Revolution 2 September 1835. Some say the schooner San Felipe commanded by Thomas F. McKinney fired first. In 1836 the Laura forced the first passage through Buffalo Bayou to Houston.

He married his second wife in 1843 and she was his sole heir. There were no children from either of his marriages. Thomas "T" McKinney appears on the 1850 Travis County Texas Census (page 1873) family 90. He is listed as a stockraiser with an estate valued at $10,000. In 1857 his partner Williams died and at the outbreak of the Civil War Thomas Freeman McKinney was an ardent Unionist. The war and Reconstruction years coupled with many cotton market reverses took a large toll on his personal wealth. He died 2 October 1873 and is buried in Oakwood Cemetary in Austin, Texas.
