George Butler Martin 414 Isabella Street Wilmette,Illinois 60091 Fax: 847.296.4335 | Family history should be fun and educational. My family has been in America for many generations, at least in some lines. In general, my ancestors were not high and mighty, nor were they cruelly oppressed, just people trying to make a living and feed their families. At the risk of sounding extremely pompous, I regard the history of my family as the history, in microcosm, of America. In a cultural sense, our history is not so much the product of the very few political, military, scientific, and creative geniuses.Rather, it is (in my opinion) more the collective product of the many millions of people who were just trying to make a living and feed their families, and who lived their lives one day at a time. Where information is available, I like to have anecdotes about, and photographs of, the ancestors who are listed in my family tree. They give a much better sense of who these people were than the simple So-and-so begat So-and-so type of information. Family history is also a never completed project, so I hope that at least some others in my direct family will take up the interest some day.Others have done genealogical research on the Martin and Buckner (the surnames of my father and mother) families. Those that have done so appear to be from branches of the family far removed from mine.Another surname in my family past, Leggett, has also been the subject of substantial family research.I have less information about the other branches. Most of the names in my family background are relatively common English or Irish names, so it is not an easy task to determine whether or not somebody with a certain ancestor's name is actually a relation.I would certainly welcome any information from anybody who has possibly common connections, and I would be pleased to share information I have with anybody who is interested.
