Ancestors of Jeremy William Martin

      317. Isabelle ???

Notes for Johannes Linebarger:
Ancestor of the Lineberger family of Lincoln Co., NC

Paul Myron Linebarger, a descendant of Eli Linebarger and author of "Family of Five Republics," reports that the Linebargers were a royal family in Germany, and that the father of Johannes Linebarger was beheaded for a stand that he had taken and the estate was confiscated; Johannes, his mother and brothers sought safety in America.

Another version put forth by Ralph P. Lineberger, Sr. in his book "The Peter Lineberger Story" (Spindale Press, Spindale, NC, May 1973) is that the three brothers and their parents sailed for America, and the parents died in transit. Mr. Lineberger further states that the brothers arrived with a trunk of gold which was appropriated by the ship's authorities.
Mr. Lineberger reports that the ship was the Billander Oliver, and that the ship's master was Samuel Merchants of Charleston, SC. The ship's roster lists eighteen men, eighteen women, six boys and three girls aboard; 45 in all. They were German-Swiss people from Canton, Bern, Switzerland. The ship arrived in America on 26 August 1735.
Included in the roster of the Billander Oliver:
Hans Ludenborg
Hans Leyenberger
Peter Leinberger (under 16)

(He may also have been the Johannes Lienberger who arrived on the ship BROTHERS on 16 Sept 1751 at Philadelphia, but it is more likely that he arrived on the Billander Oliver.)

Lewis, Johannes and Peter landed in Philadelphia and stayed for awhile in Pennsylvania, then came south to North Carolina.

Peter Linebarger is the ancestor of the Lineberger family of Catawba County, North Carolina. Peter wrote his will in 1802, and it was probated in 1803 in Lincoln County, North Carolina.

For the most part, the Lincoln County family of Johannes Linebarger kept the "Linebarger" spelling.

Lewis Linebarger is the ancestor of the Lineberger family of Gaston County, North Carolina. He was a Captain in the Revolutionary War. Lewis resided about 4 miles northeast of what is now Dallas, Gaston County, North Carolina.

[Ralph P. Lineberger, Sr., The Peter Lineberger Family, 1973] On September 6, 1769, John Linebarger bought a tract of land from N. Crowder and wife, Calamia, of 200 acres on Long Branch of Killian's Creek, above the Shoals and above Joseph Sailors place.

[Irene L. Armstrong, A Lineberger Genealogy, 1978] January 10, 1792, Jackson Harwell sold land to John Linebarger of Pennsylvania, 150 acres starting on the west side of the Catawba River, part of a tract granted to Samuel Fisher on August 7, 1767, Book 18, page 237, Lincoln County Court House. Witnesses: Samuel Harwell, Peter Lineberger.

From "Benton Genealogy" pp7-8:

"ISAAC4 BENTON (Joseph3, Andrew2, John1), who lived in Hartford, Tolland,
Kent, and Salisbury, Conn., married Mar. 16, 1730, Ruth Norton of Edgartown,
Mass. He was in Tolland, as early as 1716, removed from there to Kent in
1743, where he and his wife joined the church, Mar. 14, 1744, and from there
went to Salisbury in 1746. He became a freeman April 8, 1751; was a sealer of
weights and measures in 1753 and '55; a tither in 1754; and a lister and
grand-juror in 1756. His gravestone in the Old Cemetery at Salisbury is
inscribed: 'Here lies Interred The Body of Mr Ifsaac Benton He Died September
17th A.D. 1757 [ae 54].'

"His son Isaac was executor of his will, and his estate of seventy-nine acres
in the southwest corner of the town, near Ore Hill, and personal property of

surviving children."

  Notes for Ruth Norton:
.

From Benton Genealogy, pp62-63:

"'RUTH NORTON of Edgartown,' (Dukes Co. Mass.), who was married to Isaac, son
of Joseph and Sarah (Waters) Benton, in Tolland, Ct., Mar. 16, 1730, was a
descendent, probably in the third degree, of Nicholas and Elizabeth Norton,
who were at Weymouth, Mass. as early as 1637, at which time he was a tax
collector and constable. A daughter Ruth, who married a Cleveland in 1676,
and four sons: Isaac, Jacob, Benjamin and Joseph, were born there -- Isaac,
May 3, 1641, and Jacob, Mar. or Apr. 1, 1643. And while there is no record of
the birth of the others, it appears elsewhere that Joseph, who left a will,
was eighty-nine years old at the time of his death in 1741, and hence born in
1652. The family removed to Edgartown (Martha's Vineyard) as early as 1659,
where both parents died in 1690--the father first at the age of ninety years.
Their son Isaac Norton married Ruth, a daughter of Thomas and Ann (Baker)
Bayes, who were at Edgartown as early as 1653, from Dedham, Mass., where they
were married, Oct. 26, 1639, and the daughter Ruth was born, April 5, 1642.
The will of Thomas Bayes, dated Feb. 14, 1680, probably the year of his death,
mentions his daughter Ruth as 'the wife of Isaac Norton.' As Jacob Norton
died unmarried, and neither of his brothers, Benjamin and Joseph, had a
daughter Ruth, the inference is strong that Isaac Benton's wife, Ruth, was a
granddaughter of Isaac and Ruth (Bayes) Norton. Diligent research has failed
to discover the missing link."

[end]

[I'm not sure I follow his logic. He doesn't say where he gets the name 'Ruth
Norton of Edgartown, Mass' but I guess it's from Tolland, CT marriage records.
If there's only one Norton family of Martha's Vineyard, it seems reasonable
to trace descent from Nicholas, but I don't see where he gets descent from
Isaac, surely Benjamin or Joseph could have a granddaughter named Ruth even if
their wife's name was not Ruth. For example, Joseph could marry an Ann, have
a son named John who married a Ruth Smith, and they name their daughter Ruth
Norton. Or they could just pick the name Ruth without naming her after anyone
in the immediate family. How did Ruth get from Edgartown to Tolland? She may
have come with her parents, or perhaps her husband- Norton may be her married
name and she may have been a widow. -JBC 1995
