Manch. (Old Derryfld.) TR's, mf/NH State Lib. He served at Bunker Hill and was on the Arnold Expedition to Quebec. En route to Quebec he passed the area at Embden where he would later settle. Thence they moved across the Kennebec River to East Madison. He and his wife Mary Griffin had a pew in the Bloomfield Baptist Church, and after his death in 1816 his probate inventory was filed in the Somerset county probate office in Skowhegan.
His bill with the Samuel Weston store in old Canaan Plantation is still legible on the original parchment in the Weston probate/inventory of 1803. Presumably his burial was in the little old cemetery near to his home in East Madison, on the west side of the road leading north. Either that or on the Frost property, across the river in a now disappeared cemetery. (He died in the middle of the coldest winter on record, and Frost was a close friend from N.H.and a compatriot in the war.) An old man in Embden claimed to have seen the gravestone with his name on it, but all that is now lost.
There is no doubt the DAR record is incorrect for this Nathaniel Martin. He served in the Revolution and is well-documented; and his identity, his spouse and his death in East Madison is officially recorded in Skowhegan, ME.
