Somerset Co. Reg. Deeds, ME. Quitcl. [81:148] to family fr. Plainfield, ILL.;
1840 ME Census; Dexter, ME TR's; see "Martins of Mooretown," K.A. Martin,
FamHistLib. The Dexter Town Records [#163, p. 82] shows the birthdates of Jesse Martin, Jr., his wife Mary, and all of their children. Jesse Martin, Jr. was listed as "Trader," and owned mill and dam privileges in Dexter, Maine (Piscataquis Co.) where he ran a fulling mill. He dealt in real estate throughout the county, and owned many properties. After 1850 he took his family out to Chicago, Illinois, where he continued his clothier and fulling mill business.

Notes for M
ARY SPRAGUE:
Dexter, ME VR's,p.82,#163; Eastern Gazette Hist./Dexter
Mary Sprague is part of the family which operated Sprague's Mills, located on a stream which passes through the town of Greene. Though only large granite slabs and rocks remain to mark the site of the mill, the home still stands: a foursquare, hip-roofed, Federal style dwelling, with tall chimneys; while in the front is a gabled later period add-on structure. The railroad passes nearby. The type of mill is undetermined as yet. Jesse Martin, Jr. later ran a fulling mill in Dexter.

44. ALVEN C.6 MARTIN (JESSE5, NATHANIEL4, SAMUEL3, JOHN2, GEORGE1) was born June 17, 1821 in Fayette, Kennebec, ME, and died January 15, 1892 in North Hancock, Hancock Co., ME. He married (1) LUCY N. TOBEY May 11, 1845 in Vassalboro, Kennebec, ME. He married (2) ANNA R. FULLERTON July 01, 1860.

Notes for A
LVEN C. MARTIN:
The death certificate for Alven C. Martin indicates he was born in Fayette, ME in 1822, son of Jesse Martin, and died from heart failure, age 70, in North Hancock Jan. 15, 1892 [Maine Statewide Vital Statistics]. Rev. Jesse Martin ministered in Fayette in 1820-22 [Census 1820, Fayette, occ. Licensed Preacher].

Notes for L
UCY N. TOBEY:
Her marriage is listed in the Vassalboro, ME TR's. Lucy's middle initial likely stands for Nymphas Tobey, her grandfather. Alven's middle name Cushing may derive from his mother's surname, but this is uncertain.
The vital records of Alven and Lucy Martin and their children were entered by him in the town records of Amherst, Hancock Co., ME, held in Maine Archives. His beautiful cursive script may be seen recording marriages during the period he was Town Clerk for Amherst. His death record for Jan. 15, 1892 just barely made it into the statewide listing. His occupation was that of "Teacher," and he was buried in Ellsworth, Maine.
He records the death of his first wife, Lucy, in Amherst, wife of Alvin, May 11, 1855, age 33 yrs., 7 mos., and 24 days. So it seems that they moved northeast from Vassalboro after 1850 to the Amherst-Waltham area, where they may have received land from Alven's family, who had already settled around Dexter. When Lucy died the children were dispersed among their related families in Waltham, at least until Alven remarried to Anna Fullerton in 1860. They must then have settled in the town of North Hancock, as that is where he died. They appear to have had no children.
After Alven's death in 1892 Anna must have settled with her family in Ellsworth, as her remarriage has not been found.

Marriage Notes for A
LVEN MARTIN and LUCY TOBEY:
Their marriage was performed by Alven's father, Rev. Jesse Martin [Vassalboro Town Records].

Notes for A
NNA R. FULLERTON:
Since Anne was "of Ellsworth" when she married Alven, it is assumed she was born there, especially because that is the only place in northern Maine where the Fullerton surname occurs.

Marriage Notes for A
LVEN MARTIN and ANNA FULLERTON:
The census of Amherst, Hancock Co., ME in 1860 states that Alven and Anne were married within the year, and in fact they had just been married on July 1, 1860. At this time the 3 boys by his previous marriage were living with related families in the nearby town of Waltham following the death of their mother Lucy Tobey Martin in Amherst in 1855. At the time of the 1860 census Alven and Anne were living with the Alfred Kimball family, closely related to the Kingman and Haslam families of Waltham. (See Hist. of Amherst, Constance Jellison]
