Descendants of James Harvell in Madison, Robbinston, and Solon, Maine
Generation No. 1
1. JAMES1 HARVELL was born Abt. 1675, and died Abt. 1711. He married MARY WAITE September 04, 1704 in Boston. She was born Abt. 1675, and died Unknown.
Notes for JAMES HARVELL:
James and Mary moved from Boston to Lynn, Mass., where records show a "warning out" Dec. 8, 1704. They had been married only three months, and it was a common practice to warn out families who might become a financial burden to the community. From there they moved to Malden, Mass. where their children were born. In later years these families moved into N.H..
FOREWORD: In this report the James Harvell who was born in 1675 is being considered Generation #1. The names of various Harvell family members and their towns of settlement after they left Boston until they reached N..H. (and beyond) are offered as assumptions generally accepted by researchers, based on the best records available. It is not possible to identify perfectly all individuals and relationships in the early period as the same first names were used repeatedly.
By the early 1790's several 4th generation Harvells moved out of central New Hampshire to the town of Madison, Somerset Co., ME, specifically along the East Madison road. Their activities in that area are obscured by a lack of Madison vital records, totally lost in a fire in 1892. The data throughout this report derives from Town and Family Histories, Deeds, Censuses, Probates, Gravestone Inscriptions, Incorporation Petitions, Newspapers, Missionary Magazines, Diaries and the 1803 survey map. The early genealogical data from Mass. and N. H. was contributed by ROGER and CHARLES HARVELL as derived from major internet sources, such as Dr. PAUL C. DOWE's files. The latter contain the most detailed information on the Harvell family's movements in Mass. and southern N.H.
The East Madison Harvell family information has been gathered and contributed by THELMA MANTOR (see Generation 7) and the writer of this report, KATHLEEN MARTIN. It is offered as a reasonable account of the migration of some members of the Harvell families from N.H. to Maine around 1790, and does not purport to be a finished product.
It is fortunate that the three-page Madison incorporation petition headed by Capt. John Harvell 4 (John 2-3, James 1) was preserved at the Madison Historical Society Museum. Even more useful was the description of Capt. Harvell given by travelling missionary Rev. Alexander MacLean in his daily diary of complaints. [See notes for John Harvell 3.] Rev. MacLean made a regular tour of these Maine towns on horseback, talking to the citizens and stopping in local inns for refreshment.
The deeds relevant to family members are stored in the registries for Somerset, Kennebec and Lincoln counties, and are indexed and in excellent condition, some probates as well. Washington County (Robbinston) deeds and probate are held in Machias, also indexed and in good condition.
The Robbinston history has been contributed by direct descendant JAMES RUSSELL, who grew up at the Harvell place in Robbinston, and now resides in Wyoming. He cites his record sources for generations 1-7 as: "Robert Vose and His Descendants," E.F. VOSE, published privately in Boston, MA, 1932. Additional family information was derived from documents provided by RICHARD HARVELL and KELLY HARVELL. One of these files described an amazing event: A set of HARVELL QUADRUPLETS had been born in 1793 "in the area near Norridgewock," probably the first ever reported in Maine up to that time.
The records used by James Russell were assembled about 1870 by LYDIA VOSE BUCK SNOW (1820-1887), maternal aunt of ANNIE GERTRUDE BYRNE, and have been maintained ever since. She was a missionary to Micronesia, and many of her records were contributed to the Congressional Library, 14 Beacon St., Boston. None of the data in these family files came from LDS or internet sources. It is family records, maintained by the family.
