Dear Cheryl Martin,

The letter you addressed to Mr. Richard Langlois reached me recently. Even if I am not perfectly bilingual, I can read English and write it reasonably, at least as much as the computer translator you used, as I could see! All this, on a humoristic mood!

I will try to answer your questions at the best of my knowledge.

When you got in touch with Mrs. Gisele Langlois-Martel, this person submitted the problem of the origin of Charles Langlois and Desanges Simoneau to me. Has the name Simoneau been changed to Simmons in the USA? It's possible. Also, it isn't impossible that Desanges be a variation of Desneiges.

Charles Langlois and Desanges Simoneau married at Cap-St-Ignace, January 12, 1858. I include a list of directs ancestors of Charles Langlois up to his first ancestor in America. Noel Langlois.

A booklet intitled Noel Langlois et ses fils, written by Michel Langlois can be bought from the Association Les Langlois d'Amerique, for as little as 6.00$. This booklet relates history of the first three generations of decendants of Noel Langlois. Only incovenient for you: it's in French language.

To my knowledge, Charles Langlois and Desanges Simoneau were parents of 5 children:
1) Charles-Alphonse, born: October 25, 1858
2) Barthelemy-Idola-Adelard, born: July 9, 1865; deceased: August 27, 1870 (5 years old)
3) Joseph-Amedee, born: July 15, 1870
4) Narcisse-Arthur, born: July 28, 1871; deceased: September 21, 1871
5) Phileas-Arthur, born: January 24, 1873.

The date of birth of this last child is not the same as the one mentioned on your family pedigree; but it could well be that Archie, your great-grandfather. A detail worth of mention: Your grandfather's surnames were Arthur-Charles, maybe in memory of his father and his grandfather!

To get the last word of it, we should have a look at Wisconsin Census, Immigration List and Naturalisation Requests. At present, these resources are not available here.

Now concerning the other request, the Association Les Langlois d'Amerique has not yet well organised genealogical archives. Some members, and I am one of them, have undertaken such researches; it's a pleasure for them to answer questions from members, in as much as it is possible.

Personally, I work on building up the index of all marriages of Langlois, men and women. In my computer I have more than 8,000 marriages of Langlois of all kinds. It sill remains a great work to do.

Even if our Association doesn't have all the desired facilities, National Archives of Quebec, publics libraries and Genealogical Societies are well equipped. It would be easy to complete there your canadian ancestry.

As Texas is not close to door, I could make some research for you, against little compensation. It is up to you! But the upper mentioned questions concerning Archie and Charles should be clarified first.

I include some Family blanks where youcan enter information on your Langlois ancestors, including uncles, aunts, brothers, sisters, and so on. And I apologize for all misspellings and all mistakes in this letter! I hopeyou won't have too much trouble in understanding me. If it isn't clear, please, let me know!

Sincerely yours,

Jean-Paul Langlois

Family history suggests that it was possible that Marie Elia (Léa) mother's was an Indian. Moisan is not an Indian name and I did not find any Indian name in the maternal ancestors. However, one of Lea's ancestor, Jean François Trudel, a farmer, was living in Lorette (near an Indian "Hurons" village).

Carol,
Eugene Gagne was my ggrandfather who was born about 1860 in Quebec Canada. He married Emma Langlois (when and where I don't know) but they lived in Michigan when he was born in 1886. The family moved to Hayward Wisconsin (again I don't know where or when or even why...always thought there was family there?). Emma died (again, where, when? Michigan or Wisconsin or even Mn ?) Grandpa Edward Joseph Gagne said that he spent time in an orphanage (wi or mn) and his father married Laura Varnamen. The family then lived in Virginia Minnesota. Edward had two sisters, Josephine and Minnie with Emma as their mother and two half-siblings, Eugene and Blanche. I would greatly appreciate if you could find out anything on the above. All family that might have known anything have long since died and those of us still left are totally in the dark on this. Thank you.
