William served the Union in the Civil War, enlisting in Co. B. 9th W.Va. Infantry March 1, 1862 and re-enlisting as a Veteran Volunteer March 31, 1864 under General Order #191. He was wounded at Winchester Virginia August 26, 1864, transferred to Co. "I" 1st W.Va. Infantry and discharged July 21, 1865.
