Died at the home of his grandson, Fred James, Monday evening, June 24, 1912, William Kerly, aged 83 years, 11 months and 27 days.
William Kerly was born in England, July 27, 1828. His boyhood was spent in England but when a young man decided to come to America and reached this country in 1853. After his arrival here he was united in marriage with Margaret Hagen and to them were born two children, one dying in infancy and the other, Mrs. Richard James, died in 1892.
A great many years ago Mr. Kerly joined the Methodist Episcopal church and remained a faithful member of this church until his death.
He came to Dakota about forty years ago and took a homestead in the east part of Lynn township and retained possession of this property since that time but has not made his home there for some time.
All of the early day settlers of Lincoln county will remember Mr. Kerly as he has always been active in the upbuilding of this community and up to a short time before his death was unusually active for a man of this advanced years. He lived to see the bleak Dakota prairie blossom and become peopled with some of the best and most industrious people of this young state and in the passing away of such men. There is a vacancy which cannot be filled but there is comfort for those who will miss him most of his life was a life well spent.
For almost a year prior to his death, Mr. Kerly suffered to some extent and during the last month his condition was quite critical, so that the final death summons did not come as a surprise but brought sorrow to the relatives and friends in this community.
Funeral services were held at the home of Fred James Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock and were largely attended by old neighbors and friends. Rev. Fred Smith of Worthing conducted the services and music was furnished by the Methodist choir of this city. Interment took place in Forest Hill cemetery where the remains were laid to rest beside those of his wife and daughter, Mrs. James.
The immediate relatives who were left to mourn the taking away of this loved one are Richard James and his five children, Harvey James, Mr. C.L. Williams, Fred James, Will James, and Miss Annie James and to them we extend our sincere sympathy.
