Randal and Sarah Vernon were from Lower Providence. He has a man of eminence in those days (1709) and a very active and influential member of the Society of Friends, and it was through his instrumentality and exertions that the monthly meeting of Chester was established and the first meetings for business were held at his house. The records of both monthly and quarterly meetings bear constant testimony to his usefulness and excellence throughout his long life. Besides his frequent employment in Church affairs, he was often entrusted with public business. In 1687 he served as a member of the Provincial Assembly and his name frequently occurs in the records of the County in various civil, responsible appointments, indicative of the high esteem in which he was held. Randal emigrated from "Sandyway", Cheshire, England in company with his brothers Thomas and Robert, and arrived in this country a short time before William Penn in 1682. He selected his land in Lower Providence Township, adjoining and between his two brothers and for some time they three, with their families, occupied one dwelling. The brothers, like so many of the early settlers of the Providence, left their homes in England on account of religious persecution, Thomas having suffered by fine and imprisonment for adhering to that faith, to which they were all converts. They were sons of James Vernon, who was at one time Secretary of State of Great Britain, and brother of Sir Edward Vernon, "Vice Admiral of the Blue" in the British Navy and descended from the Staffordshire branch of the Vernon family, one of the oldest and most nobel of all England, tracing their descend from Lord William De Vernon who was a sovereign in his own right in Normandy and accompanied "William, the Conqueror" to England in 1066. Randal lived to the advanced age of eighty five years and deceased 18 Oct 1725, having survived his wife Sarah six years. *Source: Howell Records book.
