NOTES: History of York Co., Historical Facts & Incidents, pg. 644: There were quite a number of Revolutionary soldiers from Fairview Township, some who lived t o old age; among them were Gen. Michael Simpson, Jacob Greenwalt (a farmer, a large man), wh o lived as late as 1827; William Sharp, J. ENFIELD.
The above listed book shows passenger lists of German emmigrants arriving in the Port of Phil adelphia, PA between 1727 - 1808. Joseph Infeld (Emfield?) was listed as taking an oath of a llegiance (to the British Crown, in the American Colonies) on the 22nd of November, 1752. Th is was a common practice for all arriving foreigners. He arrived on the Ship "Phoenix", wit h Captain Ruben Honor. The ship came from a port at Hamburg, Germany, arriving at additiona l ports in Rotterdam (Holland) and Cowes (England) enroute to America. No other family membe rs were listed, although they only required the males over 16 years of age to take the oath . (Some passenger lists are more detailed and list families, including children and wives, p lus ages. This one does not.)
From the book Pennsylvania German Pioneers, Vol. 1 it states:
Pg. X1iv: Item #11. Initials and marks of persons who could not write have been enclosed in round brackets ( ), to distinguish them from the signature made by the clerk.
Pg. XXXIV: Beginning with the year 1752, nine ships started on various years from Hamburg, Germany, and from there went either to Cowes or to Plymouth.
Pg. XXIV: Of the 324 ships arriving between 1727 and 1775, we have the Captains' lists of only 138 ships. (Additional Note: According to the book, emmigration all but stopped during the American Revolutionary War. That is why there is a ga p between 1775 & 1789.)
THERE MAY BE A CONNECTION BETWEEN THIS JOSEPH (INFELD) AND JOSEPH EMFIELD/EMPFIELD (RIN 760). HE MAY BE HIS GRANDFATHER, WITH VINCENT BEING THE FATHER. (Vin cent's son is born about 1783, Joseph Emfield is born about 1799. Still a large gap.)
