Sir Thomas Holland, 6th Earl of Kent (1360); one of the first knights of the Garter (1344). Thomas became Earl of Kent through his wife, Joan, the Fair Maid of Kent, 5th holder of the title, daughter of Edmund of Woodstock, 3rd Earl of Kent. He fought against the French at Sluys (1340). Joan was 32 when Sir Thomas de Holland died. She was still beautiful. As a widow she was a great catch. Her only brother had died and she became Countes of Kent and Lady Wake of Liddell in her own right. She had wide possessions and a handsome pension from the crown for her lifetime. Sir Thomas de Holland, 6th Earl of Kent, Knight of the Royal Garter. Bore arms for his service to King Edward III fighting in the wars in France. In the 27th year of Edwards reign he was appointed captain-general in the dukedom of Brittany; in the 30th year of Edward's reign he was made governor of Guernsey, Jersey, Sark and Alderney. Four years later he was Earl of Kent in right of his wife, which title summoned him to Parliament that year. Holland's didtinction in the wars in France won him arms" azure, semee of fleur-de-lis, a lion rampert guardant argent. He was among the first knights to belong to the Royal Garter.
