Joan was the daughter of Edmund (of Woodstock) Plantagenet 4th Earl of Kent and Margaret Wake of Liddell. Joan died OCT 1385 at 57 years of age. Lady Joan Plantagenet, Princess of Wales, Fair Maid of Kent. Joan 'The Fair Maid of Kent' was famed for her buty and charm, though her nickname was probably a later invention. In 1349 her marriage of 1340 to William de Montacute, 5th Earl of Salisbury was set aside because of a precontract of 1339 with Sir Thomas Holland, whom she m.. Sir Thomas died in 1360 and the following year she m. Edward, the Black Prince, to whom she gave two sons: EDWARD (who died in infancy) and the future RICHARD II. Both children were b. in Gascony, where she lived with her husband from 1362 to 1371. After his death in 1376, she protected John of Gaunt from Londoners who rioted against his support for John Wycliffe the following year. Although 'devoted to pleasure, and so fat from eating that she could scarcely walk', according to the chronicler Thomas Walsingham, Joan mediated between John and Richard II when they quarrelled in 1385.
