Robert Holland (b. Abt. 1281, d. Oct 1328)

Robert Holland (son of Robert Holland and Elizabeth Samlesbury)^{5837, 5838} was born Abt. 1281 in Upholland, County Lancashire, England^{5839, 5840}, and died Oct 1328 in Windsor, England^{5841, 5842}. He married Maud De La Zouche on 1308 in Leicester County, England^{5843, 5844}, daughter of Alan De La Zouche and Eleanor Segrave.

1st Baron Holland of Upholland. Sir Robert de Holland, Knight, was illegally be-headed Oct 1328. Member of the House of Parliament.
He was granted a pardon ca 1316 in Winchester, England. Beginning as
a well-to-do Lancashire Squire he owned his advance to jis position in the
household of that feudal lord of vast domains, Thomas, Earl of Lancaster, grandson
of King Henry III through that king's second son Edmund and nephew of Edward I.
Robert de Holland took part in the Scottish wars at the end of the reign of Edward I
and the beginning of that of Edward II. In the first year of the latter reign he
received from the crown seven manors in Derbyshire. William Wallace's rebellion
(1297-1305) required a second conquest of Scotland and led to the capture and
execution of Wallace. Edward Incorporated Scotland with England, however, the
celebrated Robert Bruce now rebelled, and Edward I died while on an expedition
against him (1307). Edward II (1307-1327) lost Scotland to Bruce at the Battle of
Bannockburn in 1314. In 1307 he rode at a tournament held outside London in the
fields of Stepney, where he bore for arms 'azure, semme of fleurs de lys, a lion
rampant guardant, argent' and in the same year he obtained further terrirorial grants
from the crown. This was the first year of Edward II's unhappy reign. In the same
year Robert de Holland obtained leave to fortify (/kernellare') his mansions of
Holland in Lancashire and Bagsworth in Leicestershire, and was appointed Chief
Justice of Chester, with the charge of the royal castles of Chester, Rhudlaw and
Flint. In 1308 he made a great marriage with Maud, then aged 24, younger daughter
and co-heiress of Alan, Lord de la Zouche of Ashby de la Zouche in the Co of
Leicester, who was great-grandson of King Henry II by the fair and frail Rosamond
de Clifford.
