Maria Mestas was born in Weston, CO about 1868. [Cuchara is located about halfway between La Veta and Weston on Colorado highway 12, called the Highway of Legends. During their final years, Carmelita Rivera Archuleta Marquez, who had been raised by Juan Alejandro and Maria, brought her grandparents to live with her family on the Marquez ranch, also in Corrumpa. At the that time Corrumpa had a post office, a store, and a one-room school house. The 1910 Federal Census for Harrison Township, Cimarron, Oklahoma shows that Socorro Rivera was living there with Jose Isidro Archuleta and six children, ages 8 to 3 months. Living with them was Jose Isidro's younger brother, Jose G. By this time Juan Alejandro and Natividad were living alone. Also living with them was their grandchild, Conrado Mestas, Jesusita's child.
