Notes for Juan de la Cruz Naranjo: Juan de la Cruz Naranjo was born on May 1, 1835 in Taos, NM. He was baptized on May 3, 1835. At the time his parents, Felipe Nerio Narano and Tomasa Casimira Vigil, were residents of San Antonio, NM. He married Patrocinia Martinez on November 23, 1856. Patrocinia was the daughter of Jose de los Angeles Martinez and Maria Valdez. He died August 9, 1903 and is buried in the Redwing Cemetery. His tombstone shows the dates of 5-8-1835 through 8-9-1903.

Juan de la Cruz married Patrocinia Martinez on November 23, 1856 in Costilla, NM Source: Baptismal information from "Taos Baptisms 1701-1852" by Thomas D. Martinez, page 453.
The Book of Baptisms of Taos, Vol. 3, extracted by David Salazar notes that Juan de la Cruz Naranjo, son of Felipe Nerio Naranjo and Maria TERESA Vigil (Maria Teresa is probably abstracted incorrectly).
This was probably Maria Tomasa Casimira Vigil as the 1860 Census for Costilla shows Dwelling #1366. She is living next to her son, Juan de la Cruz Naranjo. She had $90 of personal property and $100 of Real Estate Value. Same census shows Tomasa Vigil, age 48, Juan's mother, living in Household 1366, with children:
Luis, age 19; Cencion, age 13; Felipe, age 7; and Desiderio, age 2. Tomasa's husband, Felipe Nerio Naranjo had apparently died sometime between 1858 and July 12, 1860.
1860 Federal Census, Costilla, Taos County, New Mexico Territory; Enumeration District Fernando de Taos; Enumeration date July 12, 1860. Household 1367:

Dwelling 188: Naranjo Cruz age 36, farmer; REV: $1,200; PPE: $1,425 . Patrocinia (Martinez) age 36, wife, keeping house Maria Josefa age 10 Matilde age 8 YSABEL age 5 Pascuala age 2
Judging from this, Juan de la Cruz Naranjo was a prominent man. The settlement where the family lived was called Naranjo Plaza. Pioneers of the Territory of Southern Colorado, Vol. II, by Members of the Southern Colorado Auxiliary of the Territorial Daughters of Colorado, page 4, has the following information of the founding families of Crestones -- "No history of early settlements is complete without mention of the Huerfano River settlements. To the upper Huerfano River Valley in 1869 came the Francisco Valdez, Francisco Manzanares, Ramon Martinez de Valdez, Cruz Archuleta, CRUZ NARANJO and Rumaldo Atencio families. The first settlement was called "Crestones" and is today called "Chama" because some of the settlers had come from Chama, NM."
