"Ten Mile Country and Its Pioneer Families", pg 430
     The most complete record of the Lemley Family has been sent to us by Mr
Fred Lemley, an attorney at Fairmont, WV.  There are some questions still
unanswered as to the origin of the pioneer George Lemley.  One tradition states
he served as a soldier at Fort Pit, leaving the Army prior to the close of the
Revolution, to settle in the vicinity of Fort Jackson.  There he is said to
have traded a great coat for a tract of land.  Family tradition also says he
was born in Germany about 1741, though it is possible he belonged to the family
of that name that were early settlers in the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, and
may have been at Fort Pitt with the troops from that section.  He or his family
may have settled for a time in Salsford Township, Philadelphia County.  It is
definite that he served a tour of duty with Captain James Archer's Company of
Washington County, Pennsylvania Militia in 1782, and a few years later got
warants for two tracts of land in what is now Whiteley Township, near the
Franklin Township line.  It appears that he was twice married, the second wife
being Catherine Yoho.  He died in Greene County on June 1, 1813, and his estate
was probated June 29, 1813.

     John and George Lemley came to America with their parents David Lemley
and wife whose name we don't know.  They came to Philiadelphia, PA from
Southhampton, England in 1723 with five sons and three daughters.  One son,
William was born while crossing the Atlantic Ocean.  John was born in 1726 and
George in 1733, both in Philadelphia.  In 1737 the family is found in Chester
Co, PA where they lived until David died in 1757.
     In 1758 the mother, 2 daughters and 2 sons removed to Cumberland Co and
in 1771 they removed to the territory which later became Bedford Co.  John and
George married and took their families to Winchester Valley, VA where they
lived several years.
In the year 1765 John Lemley and a friend, Peter Barstow, made a trip up the
James River and via an Indian trail to the Monongahela river, on the the mouth
of the Youghiogheny River and then returned to their VA homes. They must have
liked the Country as in 1772 they joined others who moved from the Winchester
Valley to Monongalia Co in what is now WV where they took up land on Dunkard
Creek.
     Following an enlistment in the Revolutionary War and several months with
the Morgan band of Indian Rangers, they decided to locate in Perry Twp on land
that lay on both sides of the Mason-Dixon line. When he attempted to warrant it
in OCT 1786 he found Henry Frakes, a "Westmoreland Dutchman" had already done
so.  The land was surveyed again and through much pro and cons the land went to
the Lemleys in 1793.  It became known as the "Shriver Prize" containing some
388 acres.  He also had 419 acres which was called Lemley's Place and still
later acquired more land he called St. George.  All were on Dunkard Creek.

George Lemley married Catherine(1978) whose maiden name we don't know, and
they had eleven children according to his will probated 13 JUN 1813. John,
Jacob, George, Samuel, Peter, Isaac, David, Mary, Susannah, Rachel, and
Catherine.  He made sons Isaac and David his executors.

George Lemley was a pioneer settler of Greene County, Pennsylvania, locating
on "Lemley's Plain," along Whiteley Creek in 1784 and at his "Shiver-de-Frise"
plantation along Dunkard Creek, just north of the Mason-Dixon Line, in 1794. He
married Catharine Yoho, and many of their descendants moved south to become
prominent citizens of Monongalia County.

He was married to Eva Catrina Yoho (daughter of Johannes Yoho and Susannah
Catherine Lau) in 1762 in Greene Co, PA.  Eva Catrina Yoho was born on 26 MAY
1741 in Conewago Co, PA.  She was christened on 25 JUN 1741.  She died on 5 NOV
1825 in Greene Co, PA.  She was buried in Shriver-de-Frise, Greene Co, PA.
According to Denver Clayton Yoho, Catherine Yoho is thought to be the daughter
of Johannas Yoho who came to America in 1737.  Catherine Yoho was the 2nd wife
of George Lemley.  Denver Clayton Yoho wrote:  Eva Catrina Joho/Yoho, born in
Conewago, now York and Adams counties, PA, in 1741, is likely the Catherine
Yoho who married George Lemley.  Alvah J. W. Headlee of Morgantown, WV has
published, "George Lemley and wife Catherine Yoho and their descendents for Two
Centuries." He didn't know Catherine's ancestry and only guessed she is the
sister of Peter and Henry Yoho. (22 Apr 1988)

   According to the Pennsylvania Archives 6th Series, Vol. 3, page 1376,
Payroll Service, John Lemley served in the Indian Wars from Oct 4 to Nov. 3,
1786.
   He is on the 1786 tax list for Greene Twp., Washington Co., PA, so he was
at least 21 years old late in 1785
   On the 1791 list he had 200 acres, 2 horses and 2 cows.
   On the 1796 list he had 200 acres, 30 acres cleared, 1 cabin, 2 horses and
3 cows, total value $147.50.
   In 1793, John patented 156 acres of land under the name "Fear Not" located
at the head of a branch of Roberts Run that flows in at Spraggs, PA, then a
part of Greene Twp., Washington Co., PA and now part of Wayne Twp., Greene Co.,
PA.
   On 2 May 1807 he bought of his father, 196 acres, a part of "Lemley's
Plain," and "St. George" tracts in Whiteley Twp., where he apparently lived the

14.  Samuel Lemley2,12 was born on 23 APR 1784 in Whiteley Ck, Greene Co, PA.
He died on 2 NOV 1869 in Monongalia Co, VA.  He was buried in Dunkard Crk, Mt
Morris, PA.  Samuel married Rebecca, daughter of Rudolph Snider, and they lived
along Dunkard Creek just south of the state line in a red brick house built, of
local clay, in 1837 by B. Mahanna.  Samuel was a farmer and stock raiser and
drove cattle across the mountains to eastern markets. . His marriage resulted
in the birth of seven children, namely, John, Elizabeth, Jacob, Asa, Sarah,

Co, NY.  He died on 21 NOV 1889 in Wetzel Co, WV.  He acquired the original
Solomon Carney land on Carney Run, and bought additional lands around about,
all being paid for, to a large extent, by hunting, at which he was assisted by
Isaac Miller, his double brother-in-law.  They chiefly hunted deer, curing the
hams and tanning the hides.  When snow came these would be taken by sled to
Wheeling and sold. Most of the purchased land came at about one dollar per
acre.  Stephen Carney built and lived in a large frame house just below the
residence of John L Carney.  He was an active churchman, being a Methodist.
Carney Chapel was named for him.

Stephen's lands were divided among his children, giving Eli and John L the
home farm; William a farmon Lynn Camp, across from Silver Hill; Solomon and
Hiram farms on Carney Run, below his original farm; and Alva a farm on Kirk
Ridge.

Wetzel county, October 7, 1855.  Richard Lemley was born in Greene county,
Pennsylvania, June 28, 1832, and has lived in Wetzel county since he was
fifteen years of age.  During the civil war he was five months in the Federal
service.  He enlisted Mary 15, 1862, in Company N, 6th West Virginia Infantry,
was put on detached duty in a battery of light artillery, where he served as
long as he was in the army.
     Mr. Lemley was twice married, and his first wife was Nancy, daughter of
William
Flewharty.  Their children were: Barbara, born June 9, 1854; Jacob, October 15,
1855; John W.S., February 14, 1858, died July 17th following; Mary J., February
23, 1859; Anderson J., Jul 12, 1861; West Virginia, August 19, 1863; Thomas S.,
June 7, 1865, lived only one week.
     He married in Wheeling, Ohio county, West Virginia, November 16, 1865,
Rebecca,
daughter of Samuel and Mary Ann (Stapleton) Myers, and they have one son, David
W., born September 5, 1866.  Mrs. Lemley was born in Washington county,
Pennsylvania and the date of her birth was July 5, 1836.  Her father died in
Virginia, and her mother in Texas.  She was first married to Pious Blessing.
     Richard Lemley is a skilled workman at his trade, that of a carpenter,
and may
be addressed at Uniontown, Wetzel county, West Virginia.

     Morris Lemley, farmer stock-grower and drover, was born in Perry Township,
Greene Co., PA, April 2, 1834.  His parents, Samuel and Margaret Lemley, were
natives of Greene County, and of German extraction.  His father, who was a
farmer by occupation, moved to Iowa in the latter part of his life, where he
died at the age of eighty-six.  Morris, the fifth in a family of ten children,
was reared on the farm and attended the common school.  He made his own way in
the world, and is the owner of eight hundred acres of land -- 360 in his home
farm.  Mr. Lemley's example is worthy of emulation.  He first engaged in
farming on rented property, and by his aptient toil and unfailing industry has
succeeded in accumulating a handsome fortune.  In 1854 Mr. Lemley married Miss
Martha Jane, daughter of Job and Margaret (Simington) Phillips.  Their children
are:  Margaret A., Wife of William Headlee; Samuel, a farmer; Emeline,
Elizabeth, Josephus, and Spencer who died at the age of twenty-one years.  Mr.
Lemley is a Democrat.  He and his wife are prominent members of the Methodist
Episcopal Church.

     George Okey was born in Monroe county, Ohio, April 5, 1816.  He is the
son of
Woodman Okey and Catherine Lemley.  They both died in Monroe county.
     Mr. Okey's wife was Rachel A. Mann, whom he married in Bethel township,
April
6, 1876.  Mrs. Okey was born in Belmont county, September 14, 1837. Her
father's name was David Mann, and her mother's Sarah Johnson.  They both died
in Belmont county, Ohio.
     Mr. Okey was engaged in the war of the rebellion; served in the 4th
California
Volunteer Infantry.  His son was also in the service, in the 116th Ohio
Volunteer Infantry.
     Mr. Okey was sheriff in Marshall county, California for twenty-five years.
     Mr. Okey's son, Emanuel, was taken prisoner and kept in Andersonville
until he
was nearly starved to death before he was exchanged.  He was blown up on one of
the transports, and thrown into the water; he tried to swim ashore, but was so
blinded by the explosion that he could not reach there and was captured.
     George Okey, the subject of this sketch, was in the Indian part of the
rebellion, and was most of the time in Arizona; went to California in 1850,
prospecting.  He found some of the best mining country in the State.
     He has a farm in Monroe county of about eighty acres.
     The first wife was Elizabeth Rucker, daughter of John Rucker and Sarah
Jenning.
Their children were: Catherine, born in 1841; Woodman, in 1845; Charlie, in
1846; Emanuel, October 12, 1837, died 1865.
     Mr. George Okey, the subject of this sketch, in politics is a Republican
and a
true patriot to this country -- while he mourns the loss of his son was yet
willing to lose all to save the government. He has traveled quite extensively,
and still likes Ohio, the place of his birth.  Has always been a hard-working
man, and has become somewhat afflicted.  Has seen all of the trials and
vicissitudes of pioneer life in Monroe county for about fifty-five years.

as a farmer and owned 400 acres of land at the time of his death, March 15,
1876.  Of his ten children, Joseph is the fourth and was reared on the farm in
Perry ownship.  Mr. Headlee is an energetic, industrious farmer and owns ninety
three acres of well improved land where he resides, near Mount Morris, Penn.
He was united in marriage in Greene County in 1869, with Catherine, daughter of
Alexander Henderson.  Her mother's name was Catharine Lemley.  To Mr. and Mrs.
Headlee were born four children, viz: Earnest, Clyde, Mark and M.D.  Mr.
Headlee
has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church since 1852.  He is a member
of the board of trustees and takes great interest in the welfare of his chosen
denomination. He was drafted in 1863 and served his regular term in the army.

died on 9 MAY 1930.       A.J. Lemley, one of the leading physicians of Wetzel
county, located at Burton, was born in Monongalia county, W.Va., May 24, 1856,
his parents being John S. and Elizabeth (Hinegardner) Lemley.  His father is a
farmer and was formerly one of the commissioners of the county, but is not
retired from business.  These parents had eight children, six of whom are now
living.  At the age of twenty-one years, the subject of this sketch began life
for himself as a teacher.  He kept at that business for some six or seven years
and was so successful that his services were in general demand.
     When twenty-six years old he began studying medicine under his brother,
W.H. Lemley, who is a parctitioner at Uniontown.  Our subject attended the
college of physicians and surgeons in Baltimore and was graduated thereform in
the class of 1885.  He practiced a few months at Uniontown and subsequently
removed to Burton where he has followed his profession ever since with success.
He is well read in medicine, is doing a good business and bids fair to become
one of the most successful physicians of the county.
     Dr. Lemley was married August 3, 1887, to Miss Sallie A., daughter of
Levi Hoge, an old and respected resident of Wetzel county.  One child named
Frederick Leigh has been born to this union.  Mrs. Lemley is a member of the
Baptist church and she and husband have many warm friends.

Was the date of marriage, 1 Oct 1855 or 10 Oct 1855?  Both dates are
listed in "Monroe County Ohio Families."  (See page 234 and 286)

In my long search for the family's early history and pictures, I heard many
affectionate comments from kinfolk on my grandfather's gentle nature, kind acts
and fondness for music.  In later life, he delighted in joining country friends
on Sunday afternoons to make music (he played the violin) and eat homemade ice
cream. (friend Thruman Stoehr).
