There is considerable
confusion concerning our William Marsh.
Some have tried to identify the above William Marsh with the William
Marsh, aged 26 who sailed in 1635 aboard the ship "Mathew" from
London, Goodlad, Master. Our William Marsh of Plainfield died 1724 and
could hardly have been 113 years of age at his death which we would have been
had he been aged 26 in 1635. If it is
correct that William was eighteen years of age when he came to America, as some
say, that he came at the restoration of King Charles II in 1660, then he was
born about 1642, the year that his father, Capt. James Marsh, was
executed. William should have been 82
years of age when he died, as his death took place at Plainfield, Connecticut
in 1724.
It has been reported
that the family, that William belonged to, at the time of his immigration, were
citizens of a village or borough four miles out of the city of London, England,
which is now incorporated in that great city.
The Marshes owned mills around there and were engaged in the mercantile
business. The brother, Capt. James
Marsh, was killed at the battle of Edgehill in 1642, while serving with the
King's forces.
One writer states
that Capt. James Marsh was executed on order of King Charles I right after the
Battle of Edgehill for being in sympathy with Oliver Cromwell while serving
with the King's forces.
After the restoration
of King Charles II, an Aunt of William Marsh, fearing for his safety called him
home from college, had him, and two of his cousins emigrate
to America where they would be beyond the immediate wrath of King Charles II.
Another write states
that Captain James Marsh (William Marsh's brother) was taken prisoner at the
battle of Edgehill and put to death on orders of Cromwell.

Bible: This very old Bible was the
property of Daniel Benjamin Marsh who was ordained at Poughkeepsie, New York,
June 30th, 1790. Some of the data was
inscribed in the "record section," the tabulated form was on separate
sheets made into a book form and was pasted in he
bible.
(Copied by Minnie
L.C. Colman, 1934; Syracuse, New York)
The
record in an old Bible that was published in 1792 and was owned by Mr. Cady
Marsh, Jamesville, Onandaga Co., NY. Note: This write understands
that this Bible is now in the possession of the Boston Historical Society. "James Marsh of Kent in England was a
Captain against Cromwell - When Cromwell got the victory, the said Marsh was
beheaded at Hedgehall. His two sisters
being concerned for their brother William who was at College, sent for him and
two nephews, son to a half-sister to William, and they set sail for America and
landed at Salem. William went to Boston
and was a commissary in the old Indian War of 1676 was wounded in he Narraganset fight.
He was removed to Stonington and was under the care of Dr. Noyce and was
healed of his wounds. He then married
Elizabeth Yeomans and soon removed to Plainfield where he lived and died
leaving the following heir: James, William, Elizabeth,a
nd Mathias."
Writer's biography of
William Marsh:
William was born
about 1642, County Kent, England, died 1724 at Plainfield, Connecticut. He was wounded during the King Phillips War
int he Narraganset Swamp fight in 1675, and was removed to Stonington, Connecticut
where he was treated by Dr. Noyce and nursed back to health by Elizabeth
Yeomans, who he later married on October 18, 1681/2. She was the daughter of
Edward and Mary (Button) Yeomans, (1630-1662) and was born 1659 at Haverhill,
Mass. She was admitted to the First
Church, Stonington, Connecticut, August 24, 1690. William was admitted May 14, 1693, he
surveyed with his wife's brother, Edward Yeomans, the town of Plainfield,
Connecticut. He removed with his wife
and family, no doubt, about 1694, to Plainfield, conn. as
the last church record at Stonington is dated June 2, 1694.
William and Elizabeth
(Yeomans) Marsh had eight children:
- Mary Marsh
- William, died at
Plainfield, Conn, 1/23/1759, aged 74. He
was in the French and Indian War of 1756/57.
- Rev. Thomas Marsh
- James Marsh, died
4/29, 1749, married at Plainfield, CT 12/3/1711, Hannah Shepard who was born
1695, died between 1770 and 1776. There
were 11 children
- Elizabeth Marsh,
married Mr. Utley and lived in "Canada Parish", Windham County,
Connecticut
- Anne Marsh
- Mathias Marsh, born about 1595 and died shortly after
1781; Styled "Captain", he married 1/2/1726, Priscilla Brigham, who
was born 4/3/11709 in Marlboro, Mass. He owned large tracts of land in
Connecticut and in Dutchess County, NY.
He resided at Coventry Connecticut and was in Dover, NY as late as 1765,
removed to Dorset, Vermont where he died.
- Joseph Marsh, born
about 1679 (a questionable child) was at Volunetown with his brother James in
1725.
The above with some
minor changes was taken from the Marsh family Bulletin, Volume 1, Number (4)
July, 1955, compiled and edited by Warren L. Marsh, (now deceased),
Willaimsport, Pennsylvania.
An observation by
this writer: It is quite possible,
William Marsh signed on with a Ships Master (which was quite common in those
days) to become an indentured servant in order to gain passage to America. The length of service was usually seven to
fifteen years. If William came to
American in 11660, there would be 15 year in this country between 1660 and 1675
of unknown background. When the town
records were searched at Plainfield, Windham Co., Connecticut, it was found
that William Marsh signed his name with his (W) mark. There fore it would suggest to this writer
that he could not write, although he may have ben able to read, itw as said
that he was called home form College by his two Aunts, before emigrating to
American sometime after 1660 to escape the wrath of King Charles II, who had
regained his father's throne King Charles I.
William fought in the Narraganset Swamp War again King Phillip in
1675-76.

His father was James Marsh,c.1620, of Kent, England. I

Janet, unfortunately
I am unable to help you; I do not know anything about the Marsh families from
Kent. My James Marsh is reportedly from Kent England. Since posting my query,
I've learned that it was more likely the father, also named James,
that was beheaded. He would have been of an age (20-25)to
have participated in the Battle of Edgehill in Warwickshire County (the 1st
battle of the English Civil War against King Charles I). Because his son(s)
James and William were young boys, I'm sure family must have helped raise them
until they were old enough to leave England, as William did come to America. If
I learn more that might help you, I'll forward any info.

Rev. James Noyes,
Sr., born about 1608 in Cholderton, Wiltshire, England, in 1634, embarked the
ship "Mary and John" of London, England, for Boston, Massachusetts,
and settled in Newbury, Massachusetts. Colleagues of Rev. James said of him
after his death that: "he was among
the greatest worthies of the age in which he lived" Savage called him: "the celebrated James
Noyes" The immigrant Rev. James' son, Rev. James Noyes, Jr., came to
Stonington by invitation from the Town in 1664. For the services rendered the
troops, as physician and minister, during the Indian wars, he was liberally
rewarded by the General Court by a grant of land which comprised the 1902 town
of Voluntown. No man of his time exerted a wider influence or commanded more
respectful consideration from his fellow men. He was one of the founders and
trustees of Yale College, New Haven, Connecticut.

Notes for REV. THOMAS MARSH:
Thomas was a deacon
in the church at "Canada Parish" in Windham County, CT, afterwards
called Hampton, in 1730. In 1738
preached at Mansfield, Connecticut where he was pastor-elect of the
"Separatist Church," was imprisoned January 1746 for preaching
without a license, but was ordained there the same year, 1746.
A letter dated
December 14, 1975 to Mrs. Frances Allen Dunn a descendent of Jacob (3), Thomas
(2), William Marsh (1), by Jame H. Barnett, Mansfield Historical Society.
Dear Mrs. Dunn:
Your corespondence
with Mrs. Knowlton of the town clerk's office Mansfield, Connecticut has been
brought to my attention because of my long-standing interest in the Mansfield
Separatist Church which was headed initially by Mr. Thomas Marsh who appears to
be one of your ancestors. I am writing
you bout this matter form the standpoint of local history rather than genealogy
but may be able to provide some relevant information that will be of use to you
int he latter terms.
It is
well-established that the Reverend Thomas Marsh is buried in the Mansfield
Center Cemetery and I have seen his headstone.
However, the local vital statistics do not indicate the place or even
the date of his death. Form other sources, I gather that he died in 1753. His will is in the probate office of the
Windham County Probate office and I have examined it or the court records of
same. Mrs. Barnett and I recently
discovered the name of Thomas Marsh and Eunice Marsh (his wife) in the records
of the Hampton, CT. First Congregational Church and Mr. Marsh was listed as one
of the founding members of the church and suggest that Thomas Marsh your
great-great-great great grandfather's father was born 1687 though I know not where. He married Eunice Parkhurst of Plainfield, CT
in February 4, 1712. They had a number
of children one of whom was probably the ancestor Jacob referred to in your
letter to Mrs. Knowlton. Another child,
William Marsh was a member of Thomas Marsh's church in Mansfield and led a
schismatic group of Separatists to Wantaga, New Jersey in 1756. We found some traces of in Newton New Jersey
Historical Society records and learned that William Marsh has given up his leadership
of the church he founded in Wantage and that he went to Wyoming Valley, PA
where he was killed by the Indians.
Thomas Marsh bought
land in Mansfield in 1749 and his son William acquired land in 17511 but sold
it before he went to Wantage. Marsh's
connection with the Great Awakening was strong and I am trying to trace his
career in so far as documents make this possible. For instance I have in hand copies of the
warrants and court records of three instances in which he was arrested for
"disorderly" preaching; in each case, he was found "not
guilty" but was not entirely exonerated by the court and was required to
pay court cost. The cases involve arrest
for unlawful preaching in Pomfret, CT., Windham, CT., and Tolland, CT. These affairs occurred in 1744, 45, and
46. Historical accounts suggest that he
was arrested for planning to appear at a Separatist gathering in Mansfield,
CT., scheduled for January 6, 1746 and that he spend six months in jail. I have not been able to locate any
documentary evidences that he did in fact spend six months in the Windham Jail
in spit of Isaac Backus' statements to this affect. A schism developed in the Mansfield
Separatist Church sometime in the 1750's, one headed by Thomas Marsh and the
other by John Hovey who was the first teaching elder of the church. The church died out gradually and expired
finally in 1765 which only four member remaining. Thomas Marsh had no theological education, so
far as I have learned and he was ordained by a curious process used by the
Separatist so that the term "reverend" is perhaps a courtesy title
but there is no doubt that he was an ardent and courageous Chistian who
suffered much for his beliefs.
If you and or any
member of the Marsh family known to you have in your possession any diary notes
kept by Thomas Marsh or his descendants on this Separatist church in Mansfield,
I would be most eager to learn of these and to see if somehow I might attain
copies of this material. No records of
the Mansfield Separatist Church have ever been found, to my knowledge and this
greatly hampers the attempt to write a reliable historical account of this most
interesting group and its leaders - Thomas Marsh, John Hovey, Shubael Dimmock,
Matthew Denison, etc. If
you know of anything - "The Marsh Interlude Years"? that might assist me in collecting material on the career of
Thomas Marsh, I shall be most grateful for your help.
Your sincerely, James H. Barnett,
Mansfield Historical Society

From Abbe-Abbey
Genealogy:
He resided for a time
in Mansfield, then removed to New Fairfield, and later
to New Milford, where he purchased alnd, 1765, 1769, and 1770. His home was in the part now called
Jerusalem, and he resided there until his death. He was an elder in the Strict Congregational
Church of New Milford for a number of years.
From History of New
Milford (Orcutt)
Settled
in New Milford (CT), at the place now called Jerusalem, on Rocky River, where
he resided until his decease. He officiated as the minister of the Separate
Church in New Milford, and as such was of very great importance to that church,
for they were not able to pay the salary of a regularly installed minister, and
Mr. Marsh had an independent property of his own. Whether he ever received any salary is
unknown, but he probably served them as their minister several years while
living in New Fairfield, and three years after settling in New Milford.
Elihu's will (not
mentioning his wife) was admited to the Woodbury court on 5/18/1784 (per
original document).
