Land records show that John's father sold him land. John Jr. later sold it and removed to Muscatine, Ia. in 1845. John had purchased lad there at the Burlington land sales. He also went to California to prospect gold and bought more land in Muscatine.

"In 1845 came to Muscatine county, Iowa, driving a two horse team. With the exception of a year and a half which he spent in California, he resided on the farm where he died, for a period of 68 years".
