Jane VANCE was the wife of John JOSE of Cornwall and later Toronto. She was the daughter of John VANCE and born on 24 December 1824 in Scotland, probably Paisley or area. She came to Canada with her father, step-mother, Mary GOW, and sister Agnes. They first lived in Quebec City and by 1842 had moved to Toronto, Ontario.
