Notes for BENJAMIN RICHARD MARKHAM:
Obituary, Benjamin Richard Markham
From Bedford Democrat
Death of B. R. Markham

Death claimed an old and highly honored citizen of Lowry and Center Point neighborhoods last Friday, when Mr. B. R. Markham closed his eyes to scenes of this life and crossed down over the great divide. For 78 years, 10 months and 4 days he had journeyed along life's pathway ever following the way the Master trod and sowing seeds of kindness with a loving heart and a kind and ever-ready hand. He was a man by whose life the world was made better and whose loss is irreparable.
Mr. Markham was a native of Bedford County, born May 22, 1835. When he was two years old his father Jesse E. Markham with his family moved to Jennings Creek, Botetourt County, where he died after having attained the venerable age of 90 years of age and over.
In 1856 Mr. B. R. Markham returned to Bedford County and secured employment with Col. Watts near Bedford City. When Col. Watts had observed the sterling qualities of Mr. Markham he arranged for the young man to go home and take a course of study preparatory to taking charge of a large factory that the Colonel contemplated erecting on his place, but the war broke out and Mr. Markham shouldered his musket and went to the front under Col. Anderson of Buchanan, serving first in the infantry and later in the artillery. He passed through many bloody battles; among them being the siege of Vicksburg, and came out at the end of the war without a scar. At the close of the war he returned to Bedford County and again entered the employ of Col. Watts with whom he remained until 1878, and as a partner having entire charge of the business after Col. Watts moved to Lynchburg along about 1868. Five years prior to leaving Col. Watts, he bought the Smith farm near Lowry where he lived from 1878 to the close of his life, and where he reared a big family, seven of whom still live to do honor to his memory.
In 1868 Mr. Markham married Miss Calpurnia Lee a cousin of Col. Watts and daughter of T. N. Lee, who lived near Otterville. To this union were born seven children, three sons and four daughters, all of whom survive their father. They are James R. Markham, Walter A. Markham and George J. Markham. The daughters are Mrs. C. W. Leslie of Jacksonville, Fla., Mrs. Ed Theobald, of Roanoke, Mrs. J. J. Johnson, of Penicks, and Mrs. Will Theobald of Sturgis, Michigan. There are eighteen grandchildren. He is also survived by his wife, two brothers and two sisters, all past seventy years of age. They are J. N. D. Markham of Munford, Botetourt County, now past 81 years, and who attended the funeral. The other brother is Solomon Markham of Munford. The sisters are Mrs. Rebecca Obenshain, of Nace, and Mrs. Sallie Arrington of Munford.
The funeral services were held at Timber Ridge Church last Sunday and notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather and bad roads, the attendance was very large. The services were conducted by the pastor who was preceded by a few remarks by Rev. Kincanon who was several times pastor of Timber Ridge Church and had a long and intimate acquaintance with the deceased. Dr. Kincanon paid the departed the highest compliment "He was a good man". He was a man of few pretensions, but of many good deeds. He was a loving husband, a kind and indulgent father and a neighbor and friend whose loss will be sadly felt as long as life lasts with those who knew him.
Pall bearers-C. R. and C. W. Gills, R. C. Lee, Jos Skinnell, Endy Markham, Richard Markham.
Flower bearers-Mrs. Fannie Croft and Mrs. Peters, of Roanoke, Miss Lottie Keeton, Lynchburg, and Misses Julia McGrady and Maggie Lowry of Lowry.
