THE MARONEYS OF MADISON COUNTY, Tennessee

The Maroneys settled in Madison County, Tennessee one hundred and fifty years ago. The names of Henry Maroney and his son William; first appears on the Madison Co. Tax records in 1827. William was the oldest son of Henry Maroney and Elizabeth Frances, and was the grandson of Captain Philip Maroney,an Irish immigrant, who served in the Revolutionary War as Captain of the First Maryland Battalion of the Flying Camp. In 1827 Captain Philip Maroney was 93 years of age and living with his, Martha (Patsey) at Traveler's Rest, South Carolina, He died December 3, 1830 at age 96.

Henry Maroney left his parent's home at Traveler's Rest, SC around 1805 when he was about 19. He moved to Tennessee with his older half brother, Philip Maroney II, and settled in Smith Co. and later became one of the first iron manufacturers in Tennessee.

Henry soon moved across the line into Kentucky and settled near Tompkinsville where he obtained a land grant form the State of Kentucky. It was about that time he married Elizabeth Frances. Their first child, William (Billie) was born KY. He was named for his father's older half-brother, William Britton Maroney, who was a Presbyterian Minister in North Carolina. Henry came back down into Tennessee during the War of 1812; he served as Corporal in Captain James Walton's company of mounted riflemen, regiment commanded by Colonel Newton Cannon.

Most, if not all, of Henry and Elizabeth's children were born in Kentucky, though one or two may have been born in Tennessee. The oldest was Billie, mentioned above, born in 1807; then followed Jonathan, Samuel, Philip, Rachel, Frances, John (Jack), and Fidelia, the youngest daughter, was born in 1825.

About the year 1812-13 Philip Maroney II went back to Traveler's Rest, SC to the home of his parents, Philip Maroney Sr., and Martha. While there he bought some horses to take back to Tennessee. Rachel (his half sister) decided to go to Tennessee with him and rode one of the horses from Traveler's Rest to Smith Co., TN. In Tennessee Rachel met a young man from Virginia by the name of Tandy Key Young, whom she married in 1813 when she was age 20. They later moved to Madison Co. where their son, Casey Young, was born in 1828. He was later to become famous as a Lieutenant Colonel under General Forrest during the Civil War, as a prominent lawyer in Memphis, and as a U.S. Congressman from Memphis. He was known as the " Silver tongue Orator from Tennessee ".

About the year 1827 Henry Maroney and his family and other families in Monroe Co.,KY, and Smith Co., TN decided to move to Madison Co., TN, which had recently been opened up for settlement. Some of the other families that settled in Madison Co in the Medon area along with Henry Maroney and his family were Tandy K. Young and Rachel, The Frances family ( relatives of Henry's wife Elizabeth ). The Milton C. Young family ( brother of Tandy K. Young ) and the Campbell family whose daughter married Philip ( son of Henry Maroney ).

Philip and his wife had two children; the oldest girl named Elizabeth ( called Betsey ) and the youngest, a boy named James D. ( called Dempsey ). Philip's wife died when the children were young and they were taken into the home of their Uncle Billie Maroney and his wife Charity. Later they made their home with their grandparents, the Campbell's. Elizabeth ( Betsey ) grew up and married and moved to Beech Bluff, TN; no more information about her. Philip and his son James L. left Madison Co. (Medon area ). No further information about them.

In the middle 1830s, Henry Maroney moved with his family to Mississippi. They settled in an area which later became Tippah Co. where they engaged in farming activities. They remained in this area about 3 years and returned to Madison Co., TN. It was while they were living in Mississippi that Henry's son Billie, met and married Charity Peak, a young girl from McMinn Co., TN. She was visiting with relatives in Mississippi at the time of their courtship and marriage. She went with her husband, Billie to Madison Co., TN where they acquired a farm near Medon and settled down and reared a large family. Billie lived to be age 82 and Charity to about age 79. They were buried in a small family plot on their farm one mile north of Medon.

Sometime before 1840 ( probably about 1838 ) Henry Maroney became dissatisfied with living in the Medon area and wanted his family to move to middle Tennessee. He had lived and traveled in much of middle Tennessee country and decided he preferred it to West Tennessee. His family did not want to move back, so Henry went to middle Tennessee alone, at least that's according to family tradition, but evidently one of his sons was already living there of joined him later. Henry went to Jasper, Marion Co., TN , and his name appears on the county records there in the year 1840. The name of his son, Samuel Maroney , appears on the U.S. Census records at Marion Co. at the time his father was living there. While he was in Jasper, Henry's wife Elizabeth, died at Medon about 1841 and was buried there. Henry married his second wife, Mary, around 1842. The U.S. Census records show she was born in Kentucky. They operated a store or trading post between Jasper and the Tennessee River. They had three children, a girl named Mary, a girl named Elizabeth, a boy named Henry. Their names appear on the U.S. Census records for the years 1850, 1860 for Marion Co., TN

Of all the members of Henry Maroney's family, only Billie Maroney and his family remained at Medon. The others either died before the Civil War or moved away. One of the last to move from the area was Henry's youngest daughter, Fidelia, who married Robert McClamroch. They moved to Lawrence Co., Arkansas in 1868.

Many of Billie Maroney's descendents live in Madison and Hardeman counties. Some live in Memphis, One of Billie Maroney's descendents, Jasper Maroney, a grandson, age 86 lives in North Hardman Co.,TN. His daughter, Virginia, is the wife of Jackson Mayor, Bob Conger. Another descendent James W. ( Will ) Maroney, age 82 , a great grandson of Billie Maroney, lives in Hardman Co.,TN in the Toone area.

The Maroneys have been busy in recent months planning a sesquicentennial reunion. They plan to meet at Chickasaw State Park in May, 150 years after they arrived in Madison County

1844 Jasper, Marion Co., TN

Tried for bastardy. In 1844 Henry was put in jail for several months and tried for bastardy. The woman Mary ( Polly ) OYLER made the charge and after several months in jail (133). Henry agreed to pay $40 first year, $30 second year, and $20 the third year. He was not released until he came up with bond money and he was billed $15 for his keep in jail. Mary OYLER later married Thomas E. BARNES, Jr.
This occured between Henry L. Maroney's two marrages

This particular family was my late husband's family. However, his sister is
still researching the family and she possibly could help you because I seem
to remember hearing something to that effect, and the fact that her two
children were both names Oyler, seems to add to the story. You can reach
her at sueellen@ipa.net. She will be happy to hear from you. We went to
Ash Flat where Mary was buried about six years ago and possibly got a
picture of her grave. Sue could probably fill you in more on that also.
Good hunting and if I can be of any help, let me know.
