First in my direct line to America (as far as I can tell) was William Matthews b. 1756 RevWar 1777 m. 1786 to Elizabeth Shorter at St. Paul's in Baltimore, Md. d. 1819 in Northern Balti. Co. Md. (possible brother of my line Edward Matthews below) Edward Matthews b. 1761 first record in Maryland was marriage in 1782 of Sarah Tracey at St. Paul's in Baltimore, Md. d. 1837 in Northern Baltimore Co. Md.
These two brother's family records have been placed on the family tree maker internet for anyone to see and respond to.
I have compiled over 10,000 Mat(t)hew(s) names from the British Isles and U.S. in a database. These cover mostly pre 1800 but I also have a large number up to mid to late 1800's. Mostly from the records of the Family History Center IGI. I have also traced the Mathew line back to around 300 A.D. using various sources but this is and on going project. Most Mathew stayed in Wales until about mid 1500's then branched out all parts of the British Isles and beyond. One source says that a Mathew in early to mid 1400's was the first to discover America.
The Mathews families in Virginia started around 1620 and in Maryland around 1650. I have traced at least 5 seperate Mathews family lines in Maryland before 1800. Would like to share my research with others who are interested and willing to share theirs.
