Michael came over to the United States from Alsace-Loraine first and several years later went back across the ocean and brought his brother Jacob back with him.

 

Michael's body was moved from Chalfant's Cemetery, Trinway, Ohio to Dresden Cemetery, Dresden, Ohio at the time of his wife's burrial in 1897 (eleven years after his death).

"In his boyhood days Samuel Siegrist was a pupil in the common schools of this county. ... he lived on the family farm until  year after his fathers death, when at the age of eighteen he purchased a sawmill and engaged in the lumber business, buting pieces of standing timber which he cut and converted into marketable lumber. Four years were given to that undertaking, and in 1891 he married and located on the home farm, confining his attention to general agricultural pursuits for two years. In 1898 he became a resident of the city of Coshocton, where he built and equipped a distillery and engaged in its operaton until January, 1906. He also during this time conducted a wholesale liquor business and after the suspension of the distillery he became associated with J. J. Murray in the wholesale liquor business, the partinership being still maintained. In JUanuary, 1908, however, Mr. Siegrist further extended the scope of his activities by opening an automobile garage on Fifth Street with a building containing eleven thousant two hundred and fifty squate feet. Mr. Siegrist believed this would give him ample room but his patronage has increased so rapidly that he is planning to double the space of his garage in the near future. He also has a well equipped and modern machine shop, doing not only repair work for automobiles but also special machine work for various factories of Coshocton. He has a thorough and practical knowledge of mechanics and is thus able yo direct the labors of those who serve him in this department.

 

In 1891 Mr. Siegrist was married to Miss Maud M. Royer, of Franklin township, and they now have two sons, Carl S. and Raymond A., both of whom are associated with their father in business. Mr. Siegrist is an advocate of democratic principles and a communicant of the Catholic church. He confines his attention closely to business affairs, is a man of kean discrimination and sound judgement and his executive ability and excellent management have brought to th concerns with which he is connected a large degree of success." " Fairmont Av. Woman Dies At Age 90

 

     Mrs. Helena Mattingly, 90, of 819 Fairmont avenue, died at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday in the DeMent Rest Home where she had been a patient for about two years.  She had suffered a stroke one month ago.

     Born Dec. 11, 1869, in Muskingum County, she was a daughter of Michael and Elizabeth Stine Siegrist and spent most of her life in Zanesville.  She was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church and its Altar and Rosary Society.

     Surviving Mrs. Mattingly are a daughter, Miss Elizabeth of the family home; two sons, Clarence, of 739 Locust avenue, and Dennis of 649 Locust; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.  Four brothers and her husband, Dennis Mattingly Sr., preceded her in death.

     The body is at the Forest Avenue Chapel of the Bolin-Bryan Funeral Home where friends may call after 6 p.m. today and where the Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Thursday."

   A lifetime resident of the area, she was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church and a secretart at the Ohio Power Co. ofice.

"Clarence Mattingly

 

   Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Thomas Church, Zanesville, for Clarence Mattingly, 69, of Zanesville, native of Dresden, who died of a heart attack while picking apples on the Seigrist farm in Coshocton County at 4 p.m. Saturday.

   Friends may call at the Blue Avenue Chapel, Bolin Funeral Home at 9 tonight, where the Rosary will be recited at 8:30 p.m.

   He was born Oct. 16, 1898 in Dresden, a son of Dennis and Helena Seigrist Mattingly.

   Mr. Mattingly was a civil engineer for the State Highway Department in the Newark office for 38 years. He was a member of St. Thomas Church and the Holy Name Society.

   Surviving are his widow, the former Jane O'Donnell; two sons, Dr. Thomas Mattingly of St. LOuis and Dr. Charles Mattingly of Columbus; a daughter, Mrs. Lawerence Miller of Columbus; nine grandchildren and five nieces and nephews."

The 1930-31 Zanesville city directory shows Dennis working as a clerk at the "Armco Rolling Mill."

The 1935-36 Zanesville city directory shows Dennis working at the "Culhan & Secrest "automotive service station at 104 S 6th Street. Later he purchased this service station and then sold it to his first cousin Leo McLoughlin in 1940.

 

In 1940 Dennis went to work for his father-in-law at "Charles F Saup Company" and purchased Anthony Saup's (his brother-in-law) share of that business. This company did commercial roofing and sheet metal work. In about 1956, he purchased Charles F Saup's share of the company and changed its name to "Saup Company."

"Dennis Charles Mattingly, 57, of 649 Locust avenue, owner of Saup Roofing Company, died at 1:55 p.m. Monday (Aug. 2) in Good Samaritan Hospital after suffering an apparent heart attack. He had been admitted to the hospital an hour earlier.

   He was stricked ill while working at his roofinbg company.

   Mr. Mattingly was born August 9, 1907, in Muskingum Township, son of Dennis and Helena Siegrist Mattingly.

   He was a member of St. THomas Catholic CHurch, Zanesville Country Club, Elks LOdge and National Roofers Association.

   Surviving are his widow, the former Dorothy Saup of the home; a son, Jack D. Mattingly of the home; four daughters' Mrs. R. N. Maddox of Fort Ord, Calif., Miss Sarah Mattingly of Oakland, Calif., Miss Jane and Julie Mattingly, both of Denver, Colo.; a brother, Clarence J. Mattingly of 739 Locust avenue; a sister, Miss Elizabeth Mattingly of Cambridge; and a granddaughter.

   The body was taken to Blue Avenue Chapel of Bolin Funeral Home where friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Elks Lodge will hold services at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home."
