1. CHRISTOPHER J⁸ MATTINGLY (JAMES⁷, JOHN⁶, HENRY⁵, JOHN BAPTIST⁴, JOHN³, CEZAR², THOMAS¹) was born January 07, 1829 in Allegany County, Maryland, and died October 24, 1915 in Mattingly Settlement. He married THERESA HONORA DURBIN 1855 in Zanesville, Ohio. She was born July 14, 1836 in Knox County, Ohio, and died October 27, 1916.

According to some sources he was born just across the Maryland State line in Pennsylvania. Rev. Herman Mattingly stated he was born in Allegany County, Maryland. Went to Ohio as a young man. Buried at Zanesville, Ohio. Some conflicts regarding children: One source shows child Mary Jane who shows up on no other reports. The 1910 census shows him at age 81 with wife aged 73. His birth place was shown as Maryland. Residing in the home was a niece named Ida Belle, age 38 and a sister in law named Mary Durban age 45. One source gives his date of death as 10-25-1914. He was living near his brother, William, during the 1870 census with wife and five children: James; Jerome; Bernard; Isabelle; and Dennis. Others in the home included a 35 year old Mary Durbin (wife's sister) and a 40 year old Jane Mattingly (widow of John Mattingly and another sister of Theresa's and 13 year old John Mattingly). The 1880 census finds him in Muskingum, Muskingum County, Ohio with wife and five children - James F.; Jerome B.; Bernard; Emma I.; and Dennis.
