Mr. Saup died following a general breakdown in health at the house of his niece, Mrs. Elizabeth Saup of 509 South street. He had been gradually declining for the past six weeks.

Mr. Saup was born in Dunkirk, N.Y. (on) August 18 (?), 1828 [NOTE: correct date should be 1838], but, with his family, moved to this city at an early age. At the age of 21 years he left Zanesville and located in Cairo, Ill., where he resided until one year ago, when he returned to Zanesville to spend his last days.

The deceased was one of the most prominent residents of Cairo, Ill., and served that city as councilman and sheriff for several terms. For over 40 years he was deputy U.S. marshall of that district. He retired from active business about four years ago.

On May 7, 1864, he enlisted in the 1(?)43rd Illinois, V.L. as a corporal and re-enlisted at Cincinnati Jan. 14, 1854 [NOTE: date cannot be accurate] in the Hancock Veterans' corps as a private and was honorably discharger [d] May 19, 1865, at Grafton W. Va. He then returned to Cairo, Ill., where he resumed his business career.

Mr. Saup had traveled extensively within the United States and Eu(rope?) and was a man of high attainments. He was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic church and is survived by one brother, Phillip Saup, of Ocean Park, Calif. and a number of nieces, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews.
