LETTER to HIS WIFE
                                                            July 7,1864
Affectionate Wife.

Maggie permit me to scribble a few lines to you that you may not be uneasy about me. I was sent away from Martin's Ferry before the battle and landed safe and sound here. Oh, my dear wife, the hardships of poor soldiers cannot be explained to you. Only if God spares me to get with you, who I love so dear, as my wife. I will never leave you till God calls me to his home in heaven. I send this letter to you that you may pray to God and the Blessed Virgin to protect me and bring me safe to you once more and if ever I get home, dear wife, one thing I will promise to you that we will say our evening and morning prayers regular and I know that I won't be so careless about going to church where I am near. Dear, I can't tell you how long I will stay. They talk about sending us from here to Washington to our regiment, if the raid is over. You may send a letter to me dear, and if I don't get it there won't be much lost, only three cents. And if I leave I will write you again. I can tell you a good deal if I get home safe to you again Maggie, how happy a meeting it will be for both of us. The time will soon be here, then my soldiering will be played out. Twenty Thousand Dollars in gold could not hire me again, if we had both of us to live on black bread and catnip tea without meat and butter. But I must close hoping these few lines from your dear husband may find you well as they leave me. Hoping and trusting to God that I may see you face to face by the last or the middle of next month. One thing more, give my love to my mother and mother-in-law. Tell your mother and father to not forget me in their prayers, to pray for Julius for he has seen hard times, that we may both come home together. Tell my mother to forgive me for all the trouble I have ever been the cause of, for I often think of her. Tell her to pray for Mike, that he may come home safe to her again and for me. Give my love to Lizzie and Mary Kate and Josephene, to August, Ferdinand and Henry, to Charles and children and your little sister, tell them I will bring each of them some candy when I come home, write and direct your letter to

Anthony Saup, Co. G 160
Camp Parole,
Near Annapolis, Md.

You need not put nothing in it dear, for it is doubtful whether I get it or not. Tell Mr. Schinnick I did not get his letter and let me know if he got mine, I told him he must give me more wages, no more at present.

Signed

OBITUARY: R. Michael SAUP, Zanesville Signal, Saturday, January 1, 1916

R. MICHAEL SAUP CALLED BY DEATH FRIDAY EVENING
Heart Disease, Superinduced by Grippe, Caused Death of Well Known Citizen

A ten days' illness from grip, which affected his heart, caused the sudden death of R. Michael Saup, aged 70, one of the best known residents of this city, at his home, 509 South street, at 6:30 o'clock Friday evening. His condition was not recognized as serious until a few days ago.

Mr. Saup had been employed as a pattern maker at the Griffith & Wedge plant for many years and had worked until the time of his illness. For a period of twelve years, about twenty years ago, he held the position of superintendent of the Zanesville water works department. He was a veteran of the civil war and a prominent member of the St. Thomas Catholic Church and the Holy Name society.

Surviving him are his widow and six children: Thomas Saup of Toledo, Mrs. J.T. Carliss of Johnstown, Pa., Frank Saup of Lancaster, Harry Saup, Mrs. Harry Mechling of this city, and Miss Lizzie Saup of the home. Two brothers and two sisters also survive: Peter Saup of Cairo, Ill., Phillip Saup of Los Angeles, Calif., Mrs. Kate Miller of Indianapolis, and Mrs. Lizzie [Elizabeth] Epple of this city.
