Find Family

* Jerry Mattey & Elaine Wallace Mattey*

Updated November 30, 2009

I am just getting started researching our family trees.

The Mattey family traces back through my grandfather John M. Mattey (b. @ 1890) of United/Trauger or Greensburg, Pennsylvania, through his father also named John, and further back to Slovakia, with a probable original family name of Mattej or Matje. I know there are many related family members which originated in the western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio area in the mid-1800s.

My paternal grandmother Dora Polcha emigrated to the US from the former Austria-Hungary Empire (Czechoslovakia circa 1912.

Maternal grandfather is Dewey Earl Jacobs of Homestead, PA born 1895. Ancestry is German/English and traces back to a Lt. William Jacobs in the American Continental Army, local militia in northwest Maryland and soutwestern Pennsylvania @ 1765-1785.

Maternal grandmother is Patience Baker of Cumberland, MD born circa 1900. Ancestry is English, possibly Irish or Scottish.

Elaine's paternal grandfather is Elijah Wallace who traces back to Hoopers Island, MD where her father Charles Wallace was one of 22 children. Ancestry is Scottish/English. It is claimed the family is directly descended from William Wallace who was protrayed by Mel Gibson in the movie Braveheart. I would like to research this to verify.

Elaine's maternal grandmother's surname was Merion and is know to be a direct descendant of Francis Marion, know as the Swamp Fox, a revolutionary war hero.

If you have a similar background or information which may help, please contact me so we can correlate family history.
