John "The Signer" was the first-born child of James and Anne (Walker) Witherspoon. One of the most promminent figures of the day, he
was born in the Parish of Yester, near Edinburgh on February 5, 1722. He attended the University of Edinburgh, graduating in l744.
He ministered in Scotland intil 1768, at which time he immigrated to America. from 1781 - 1782. Also called "The Signer", his signature appears with those of so many other celebrated figures of his time, on the Declaration of Independance, signed July 4,1776, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was also quite well known for both his writing and his teachings, both accomplished (as were
his continued ministerings) with much eloquence. John Withspoon was twice-married.
Firstly, to Elizabeth Montgomery (daughter of Robert Montgomery). This union produced nine children--six sons and three daughters.
Secondly, he married Mrs. Anne Dill on May 30. 1791. In 1792, approximately two years before his death on November 10, 1794, John "The Signer" Witherspoon became blind, but continued his ministerings as forcefully and with as much zeal as was his custom until the time of his death.
