| Much of my research has been included in my book "Fourteen Frontier Families" I am including two reviews that describe it. Fourteen Frontier Families: Sparks, Ruth, Brooks, Pryor, Wyatt, Deale, Bull, Johnson, Pearce, Blount, Campbell, Chapman, Maxwell, Kees. 1996. By Mary Sparks Matthews, 377 N. Catherine Park Dr., Glendora, CA 91741. Hardcover, 6 X 9 inches, 519 pages, photos, charts, maps, appendix, footnotes, index. $45.00 ppd. William Sparks, Thomas Pryor, Gregory Brooks, Thomas Ruth, and Thomas Wyatt settled in Maryland in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century where their descendants would marry and ally these first five families. William Sparks, born in the early 1640s Hampshire, England, is mentioned in the 1663 sale of land rights which Thomas Skillington received by importing himself, his wife, William Sparks and several others. Starting in July 1672 he purchased land in Kent (now Queen Anne) County, Maryland. He and his wife Mary had five children. William, Jr., George, a daughter who married Mr. Hynson and died pre-1709, John and Joseph. William Sr. died in 1709. The third Millington Sparks, great, great, grandson of William, moved south to Georgia and then west to Lauderdale County, Alabama. His son married Sarah Deale. The family moved further west. His grandson, Martin, married Susan Bull whose ancestors encompass the Johnson, Pearce, Blount, Campbell, Chapman, Maxwell and Kees families. These families are followed in Chapter Four. Each appendix is a supplement to each of the four chapters. Appendix A deals with the early Maryland families, their wills and some descendants. Appendix B contains the Sparks cemetery located in Lampasas County, Texas and other descendants of Millington Sparks and the Deale families. Appendix C contains letters, obituaries, etc. of Martin Sparks’ family. The Bull family lines are extended in the final Appendix. ----CN Kansas City Genealogist, Volume 38, #3 FOURTEEN FRONTIER FAMILIES-SPARKS, RUTH, BROOKS, PRYOR, WYATT, DEALE, BULL, JOHNSON, PEARCE, BLOUNT, CAMPBELL, CHAPMAN, MAXWELL, KEES. 1996. By Mary SPARKS MATTHEWS, 377 N. Catherine Park Dr., Glendora, CA 91741-3020. Hardcover, acid-free paper, 6x9”, ix + 519 pages, indexed. $40.00 + $5.00 shipping and handling Beginning with William SPARKS, this book traces his family as they moved westward and married into the other families. William was born in the early 1640’s in England. He came from Hampshire County to Maryland in 1663 as an indentured servant. He died in 1709 having become a major landowner. He and his wife, Mary, had five known children. The book follows his family as they mingled in marriage with the PRYOR, WYATT, RUTH, and BROOKS families. His great-great grandson, Millington, migrated to Georgia with descendants proceeding westward from there. In moving west they married into the DEAL, BULL, JOHNSON, PEARCE, BLOUNT, CAMPBELL, CHAPMAN, MAXWELL, and KEES families. Each of these allied families has its own chapter and is traced back as far as possible into Virginia, North and South Carolina. Written in a narrative style, there is much personal and biographical history, as well as background material to better understand the people and the times. Many source documents are related throughout as well as reference source documentation. More than just facts, this book tells the story of this family through the centuries. Four appendices give will transcriptions, other documents, and family data for the above families in a chart like manner, which makes it easy to find desired persons and relationships. An every-name index completes this well-written and documented history. Everton’s Genealogical Helper, Sept-Oct 1997 |
