I am researching the MATTHEWS family of South Shields and Jarrow (on Tyneside, in north-east England), a family which moved there from Norfolk around 1870 (Bawburgh, near Norwich, preceded by North Walsham). The Norfolk ancestry also includes SHICKLE, BOAST, OTTERWAY, COOK, PIKE, BARKER, NAILER, WELLS and BARBER. The north-eastern England ancestry includes ENGLISH, ARKLESS, REED, SUMMERSON, WALKER, CUTHBERT, NESBIT, DERHAM, COCKERHAM, WHELDON, HUNT and SIMPSON.
I am also researching the families WATERHOUSE - which, for several centuries, lived in and around the ancient village of Meltham, near Almondbury and Huddersfield in the Pennine region of the West Riding of Yorkshire - and BAYLDON (also, over the centuries, spelt BAILDON, BELDON, BELDOM, etc.)of the ancient Yorkshire market town of Almondbury, but which seems to have come from the Dewsbury area during the mid-17th century. The Yorkshire ancestry includes the families BROADBENT, TAYLOR and MOORHOUSE (each of them Meltham families of great lineage), other west Yorkshire originating names of COWGILL (also spelt COUGILL and COUGIL), BATTYE, SYKES, DYSON, MELLOR, and KNIGHT, ARMITAGE, FRANCE, BEAUMONT, HADFIELD and SHARP, and the Saddleworth Moor families HARDY and BYRAM.
