The Matthews family surname was quite common on the border of Hampshire and Wiltshire in the 19th Century. They were almost without exception agricultural labourers. The first of my direct relations that I have been able to trace was at Little Cheverrel in 1761. The village is on the edge of the Salisbury Plain, from there they migrated Eastward across the county. The economic expansion of the 1840's saw several of them come to London or its envirions to earn their fortunes (or otherwise).

John West's will left money to all his descendants which includes the Matthews family and the fund is administered by Christs Hospital School. There is little money (£20 a year for applicants) but the John West Family Group maintains a unique record of the West descendants. Details can be found on the www.west-group.org.uk web site.
