Edward's Will Dated: October 1 1663

In the name of God Amen. The first day of October in this fifteenth year of the reign of our sovereign Lord King Charles the Second in the year of our Lord God 1663. I Edward Mathew of Littleton in the parish of Lavington Epid in the county of Wilts shepherd being sick in body but of good and perfect memory thanks be to Almighty God and calling to remembrance the uncertain state of this transitory life do make constitute ordain and declare this my last will and testament in manner and forms following revoking and annulling by these presents all and every testament and testaments will and wills heretofore by me made and declared either by word or by writing and this is to be taken only for my last will and none other. And first I give and commit my soul unto Almighty God my saviour and redeemer in whom and by the merits of Jesus Christ I trust and believe assuredly to be saved and my body to be buried in such place where it shall please my executor hereafter named to appoint.

In primis I give and bequeath unto my grandchild Edward Mathew a bed and bedstead, a pair of blankets, a bolster, a pillow, a coverleade and a chest in the chamber over the hall.

Item I give and bequeath unto my son Richard Mathew my lease of my house, orchard, garden and bankside together with a ground called Greene Nerridge and a plot of meadow in Culvermeade and all other the appurtenants there unto belonging.

Item I give unto my grandchild James Mathew a great brass kettle and a pewter platter

Item I give unto my grandchild Moses Mathew a brass candlestick and a pewter platter

Item I give unto William Mathew my great grandchild my great brass pot

Item I give unto my grandchild Anne Uppon my great brass pan

Item I give unto my daughter Anne Chilvester my great chest in the chamber at stair head

Item I give unto my great grandchild John Mathew my great chest in the hall. All the rest of my goods and chattels not before disposed of I give and bequeath unto my son Richard Mathew above said and do make constitute and ordain him sole executor of this my last will and testament In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seals the day and year first above written.
