The Sturgeon, Hunsaker, Doughty, Ledbetter of Illnois

Updated December 1, 2003

Our family is from Southern IL. We were always told we were Indians by our grandfather Albert Abraham Sturgeon b1910. That his great grandfather was a Indian Chief John Lingle. He was on the "Trail of Tears" and got off in the "Trail" in Sounthern Il because he was born on the Mississippi River somewhere in the area. So far; no information has been found to confirm the truth to the story.
My Grandmother's family from Southern Il also. Were some of the first settlers to the Southern area. The Elder John Doughty and his wife Jane McGuire along with their 16 children organized the Cumberland Baptist Church of Casey, IL in 1850. A newpaper clipping dated 07-16-1907 the church was still is use at the time. It was rebuilt in 1904.
Some of the extended family includes other first settlers to Union County were the Hunsakers, Ledbetters. We have these names in the family with missing information.
Part of my extensive search is for Fernando Wood Sturgeon. Thomas M Sturgeon m. Charity Walker in 10-25-1866, he was their son. b. 02-01-1869. Fernando m.1891 Cora E. Outlan (last name is unsure fo spelling) they had 3 children and he disappeared.
Please contact me if you feel you are part of the family.
