* Loderick - The Name that Binds - Matthews*

Updated September 6, 2000

My family story "begins" in Culpepper, Co. Va in the late 1700s. There were several John Matthews there during that period. After the death of John (15 Feb 1776), Benjamin, his son, (1748-1818) and his family migrated to North Carolina and Georgia. One of the boys was LODERICK Matthews (1794-1855). It was thru his name that a majority of the family ties were established.
In 1852 Loderick took his wife and unmarried children and moved from El Dorado, Ak to Texana, Tx (Jackson Co.) When the railroad came to Edna and the county seat was moved, the town dried up. It is now covered by Lake Texana. I am also interested in obtaining information on GARRETT, PUMPHREY, HURLEY, as well as expanding my MATTHEWS information.

Like many of us, this is a labor of love and I am more than willing to share information.

I offer my heartfelt thanks to the following people who helped introduce me to family research: Professor John Q. Anderson, Texas A&M English Dept.; my aunts Mildred Steele and Mamie Lambert; Mrs Enid Bolling of Edna Tx; Mrs Carl Moore of Baytown, Tx and Mrs Maynard H. Simmons of El Dorado, Ak - also a direct descendent of Loderick - who did the majority of the research the hard way. She would have been amazed at what support Broderbund and Family Tree maker provides.
