Ancestors of James Russell Brown

      43. Maria McCloud423, born 01 Feb 1809 in Logan County, Ohio; died in California. She was the daughter of 86. Judge William McCloud and 87. Elizabeth Boswell.

Notes for Edward Seth Hanchett:
Edward built bridges in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Illinois. He was one of the original incorporators of the Stephenson Hydraulic and Manufacturing Company. In 1855, the family moved to California where Edward made a fortune as a money lender.

In 1860, Edward Seth Hanchett and his wife, Maria McCloud, lived in White Oak Township, El Dorado County, California. According to Carol Damerval, a Museum Volunteer at the El Dorado County Museum, "White Oak Township was located near the present town of El Dorado Hills, and near the smaller town of Clarksville. El Dorado Hills and Clarksville are near highway 50 approximately 20 miles east of Sacramento."

Some members of the family moved to San Jose, California where there are still descendents. Hanchett Avenue and the Hanchett Park Area of San Jose, California, were named for the part of this family that settled in that city.

THE FOLLOWING NOTES ARE PART OF A REPORT FROM THE MICHIGAN HISTORICAL SOCIETY RECORDS, VOLUME 10:

"But for a town, our hero, Green was greater than any county was for a county. I do not know of any town that ever had so much true greatness. I find no records of the first town meeting held in the log house of Jabez Bronson. I can see who was there, certainly Bronson, Richardson, and some, if not all, of the other officers who were elected. Probably there were not over twenty or thirty voters present. There is said to be no record of the second meeting of the town of Green. But the reports of the officers elected and their other official acts show there was such an election. The Honorable William H. Cross, now living in Centerville, and who was present at the second town meeting in 1831, writes me: 'The town imeeting was held at the old Trading House on the west bank of the Coldwater River in 1832, the first Monday in April. Colonel A. F. Bolton was occupying the old building, making prepartions for the erection of a hotel on the east side of the stream, then being put up for him by Harvey Warner. After selecting Colonel Bolton for chairman; John Morse and Columbia Lancaster, then of Bronson, as clerks; we elected John Morse town clerk; Seth Dunham, of Bronson, supervisor; John G. Richardson, collector; and Willard Pierce, Edward S. Hanchett, and myself as commissioners of highways; besides three assessors. There were about thirty persons present. Of these there are only two besides myself now living. One is Willard Pierce, who returned east and a short time since was living in Connecticut. The other is Columbia Lancaster, now of Vancouver, Washington territory. He was the second lawyer in St. Joseph County and has for forty years been a prominent citizen of Oregon and Washington territories, and at one time a delegate in Congress.'"

  Notes for Lewis James Hanchett:
Margaret Mae Lane was born in either Ireland or Illinois. Her parents were both born in Ireland. The family was in San Jose, Santa Clara County, California in 1880 where Lewis was listed as a miner. That the daughter, Virginia, was born in Nevada and the son, Lewis, in California places somewhat the family's movements.

In the 1880 Census, Lewis and Margaret were listed as having two Chinise domestic servants - Ah Lem (age 33) and Ah Gong (age 21).

  Notes for William H. Hanchett:
He appeared in the 1860 census with Juliet and two daughters, in Albany, Wisconsin, where he was a miller. In 1870 Juliet was in the census with her two daughters in the family of Gilbert Dolson, age 63, and his wife Ruth, age 48, who were probably her parents, she was listed as having foreign born parents and the Dolsons were born in Canada. However, because of her age, Ruth may have been a step-mother.

The next record of William is his marriage to Elizabeth Agelia Terrier, February 13, 1866 in Bradshear, St. Mary Parish, LA. That this is the same William is established by the application for a widow's pension by Elizabeth Hanchett of Ramsey, Vermillion Parish, LA, 6 May 1891. She stated that she was the widow of William Hanchett who enlisted November 7, 1863 in Company D 1st Regiment Wisconsin Heavy Artillery at Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Further, she asserted that he died in Vermillion, November 19, 1883 and that he had previously married Juliet Dolson from whom he was divorced before their marriage.

Elizabeth's death certificate stated she died at Port Arthur, TX, May 3, 1936, age 90 y. 4 m. 3 d. and that her parents were Edward Lowry Terrier and Adeline Rouseau. Information given by her daughter, Juliet Hartman. William was a farmer.
