Notes for Thomas Gatchell:
It is to be assumed that Thomas is Samuel's father, no birth records have been found to prove this, only records of dates and places that would connect this line.
The father of John and Samuel Gatchell, in all probability, was English.Indications from the "Topographical Dictionary of 2885 English Emigrants to New England, 1620- 1650" by Charles Edward Banks (1967) that the Gatchell brothers John and Samuel came from West Monkton, Somersetshire, England. The Mary & John Clearing House, vol. 19, part three, suggests the possibility that they came to America on the ship "Hopewell" which sailed from Weymouth, England, in 1635.
Most of the information about the Gatchell/Getchell descendants listed hereafter is the collective results of research efforts by many individuals.Everett Lamont Getchell's 1909 Getchell Genealogy is a major source.Input has also come from Theodore A. Gatchell's research, David A. Getchell's 1991 Genealogy, Curt Fredrikson's 1996 Getchell Lineage and Phillip Getchell's Genealogy.Others such as Esther Getchell Bowker Lyon, Stanley A. Getchell and his wife Norma, Tawny Getchell Preston, Jayne Mailfold Loprest, Charles B. Jones, Rob Malonson and Fred L. Harmon have helped tremendously. And thanks to all those unmentioned who have helped us and the others named here in this effort.
As in any compilation of such scale, errors are bound to exist. And the goal is to correct any that can be identified. Please feel free to contact us with any such corrections.
The spelling of the Gatchell/Getchell surname varies throughout. The spellings used herein are an attempt to reflect the spellings as they appear when found by researchers in the records for the specific individuals involved. And those spellings may in fact represent only the recorder's interpretation of how the name was pronounced by the person rather than ther person's actual spelling of the name.In fact, some of the individuals signed their wills with an "X" indicating that the spelling of the Gatchell/Getchell name in the will was in fact the recorder's phonetic interpretation of the dialect used for the name in that locality.

Notes for John Gatchell: From the 1909 "Family of Samuel Getchell" by Everett Lamont Getchell:John and Samuel Getchell came to Salem, Massachusetts, in 1636.John settled in Marblehead, Massachusetts, where he had numerous family, and where many descendants lived for several generations. In July 1879, Henry F. Waters wrote in the New England Historical and Genealogical Review (spelling recorded as presented):The Gatchell family were evidently not of puritan strain, as is shown ... by the following extract from the Salem Records:At "a Towne meeting this 21th of the 6th month 1637" -- "John Gatshell is fyend tenn shillings for building vpon the Towne ground wth out leaue, and in case he shall cutt of his lonng har of his head in to seuill frame in the mean time, shall haue abated fiue shillings, his fien to be paid in to the Towne meeting wth in too monthes from this time and haue leave to go on in his belding in the meane time." John and his family were involved in a burglary in Salem that took place March 6, 1683/84.A Captain George Corwin was robbed of a parcel of New England money and five bags amounting to 500 (pounds).A servant of his by the name of Elizabeth Godsoe organized the robbery with the help of her husband and his associates. The Gatchells were found guilty apparently of money laundering as they were charged with carrying away English and Spanish money to Stage Point.John, Wibera, their son Thomas and daughter-in-law Bethiah (wife of Samuel) were charged.Son Joseph was also named during the trial.John and Thomas were convicted and faced to pay treble damages, be whipped severely with 39 lashes of pay L10.They were lucky, the Godsoes had a B branded on their foreheads, received 39 lashes and paid L10. |
