2. THOMAS2 DE COGGESHALL (TEDRIC1) was born Bef. 1149.
Notes for THOMAS DE COGGESHALL:
The first of the name of record was living in the 14th year of King Stephen's reign (1149) and held large estates in county Essex. Since Coggeshall is an Anglo-Saxon, not a Norman surname, Sir Thomas may have been a son or grandson of Tedric, the Saxon, who held Coggeshall Hall at the time of the Domesday, or alternatively, of Colo, who had held the manor of Great Coggeshall. The latter seems less likely, since Colo, having held the larger estates, was probably summoned by Harold and killed at Hastings, whereas Tedric was more likely to have been one of the many smaller Saxon Lords who immediately went over to William (the Conquereor) and thereby retained their estates. Sir Thomas was a Knight.
