This is a short introduction to thank all those who have contributed to this Family History of the Mayhead’s in both Australia and England. The main distribution of the family in Australia in the beginning was in Tasmania, and of course as the members of the family especially the females of the family left Tasmania to settle in Melbourne, Victoria. In my research the main distribution was in Launceston Tasmania. The Australian section of the Family Tree is as far as possible complete, of course this will be expanded in the future by additions, it will become clear during the reading of the family tree that as time has gone by many more families have become involved with the Mayhead name, through marriage, step relations and where some members have married more than once. During the course of researching the history I have had the privilege to meet cousins from other parts of the family, brothers and sisters and daughters who have married into other families but maintained a strong interest in their mothers maiden name. and /or their father surname. Thomas Mayhead had a brother named Emmanuel in Launceston the family mentioned him sometimes, but I had the great pleasure to meet his grand daughter and grand sons in Chichester in West Sussex England This part of the family have helped me make many connections. This family has a member living in New Zealand. Speaking of New Zealand Thomas Mayhead had two Sons Arthur and Walter, Walter was married in Launceston Tasmania and then went to settle in New Zealand, this I had heard about listening to family talk but during the course of my searching and making enquiries I was lucky to find out all about this great uncle of mine As a result of this I am able to include his history in the larger family tree. The part of the Family Tree that is in England is fairly accurate, but I would welcome all criticisms and helpful advice in order that I may at sometime have an accurate history of this quite unusual name. The people who have been given the printout of the Family Tree have been extremely helpful, these people have been able to correct the information regarding dates names, places of birth, burials, etc. Another privilege that I have enjoyed is meeting relations that did know about but never met and those that I didn’t know but have finally met. I would like to express my gratitude to the following: In Australia, Mrs Elizabeth Burton (nee Mayhead) In Hobart Tasmania, my son David Mayhead also Hobart, Geoff Mayhead ( cousin) Launceston, Heather Rawson (Nee Gordon) mother Mayhead, cousin NSW Australia, Neil and Muriel Gordon cousins Melbourne Australia William McCaskill Melbourne Australia. and Gerald Mayhead cousin. I make mention of Mrs. Barbara O’Brien and her brother Alan Brown who were able to clarify for me many dates, names and were able to fill in some of the spaces in the family tree for me. To all the above people I express my deepest thanks and hope they will continue to contribute. If I have mistakenly left out anyone then I thank them for their help. I have met other Mayhead’s who are trying to trace their family history and having difficulty I have recommended that they keep searching and maybe they will connect with us, I hope so. I sometimes feel that all the Mayhead’s could quite well be related. When started my researches in England I met a man called Ernest Hamley he has been a great help to me and has guided me through the rocky paths of family history. I pay a tribute to him and thank him for all his help and advice which he has so willingly given. He is a founder of the GOONS,(Guild of one Name Studies) Some of my contacts have come through this guild via New Zealand and Queensland Australia. Mrs Brenda Axworthy, who lives in Chichester West Sussex has been a wonderful help to me ,we discovered that we are second cousins I have now met her three brothers. I’m most greatful for her help. Last but not least my son Dr. Phillip Mayhead |
