| Anyone who has tried to research the Mayes/Mays surname knows that it's extremely difficult, since every family group appears to have had at least one William. My particular William H. (or Billy) was born ca. 1821 in Grainger County, Tennessee, and moved to Sevier County, Tennessee, shortly after his marriage to Elizabeth Flanagin on 29 Dec 1847, where he lived in the Greenbrier section of what is now the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Billy's children included John Cox Mayes, Lucy Ann Mayes, Mary Eliza Mayes, William H. Mayes, James Allen Mayes, and Nancy E. Mayes. I have a fair amount of information on the Mayes/Mays surname, which I'd be more than happy to share. Other surnames include, in the South (Virginia/Tennessee): Humberd/Humbard; Stonecipher; Armstrong; Ogle; Ownby; Whaley; Evans. In the East and Midwest: Mead; Minnich; Love; Hoff; Applegate; Hull; Kelsey; Terrill; Bassett; Canfield; Prindle. Thanks in advance for any help you can give. |
