Bob Russell or Brother Bob-- became a country Baptist preacher in rural Hot Spring County, Arkansas. He also raised riding horses and bought and sold land. He was an avid hunter, esp fox hunting. He always had expensive hunting dogs. He loved horses and fine saddles. He was said to have had auburn hair (apropos for the name Russell). He was apparently referred to locally as the 'redheaded fox hunting preacher'.

He founded several baptist churches; Caney Church, Midway, and Friendship Missionary Baptist Church(1886). He was pastor of several churches, often at the same time. He had a circuit that he covered by horseback. A goal was to have a Baptist Church within 5 miles of every potential parishioner. The transportation system in rural Arkansas was very primitive and 5 miles was relatively far to travel by horse and buggy

Bro. Bob owned large tracts of land around Hot Spring County and Clark County, Arkansas. The family moved many times.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My mother, Hallie, remembered the day he died at the Ray home in Malvern. Bro. Bob had been hunting with his favorite dog and after washing his hands had gone upstairs to take a nap before supper. When he didn't come down to eat, my grandmother went upstairs and found him laid back on the bed with his boots still on and with a very serene expression. His wife had been very ill for some time in the house also; she died a few weeks later, but never knew he had gone first. GLM10/96

  Notes for Adaline Russell:

I met Aunt Ada for the first time in the early 1960's when she and her second husband Oscar Marshall visited Malvern from out on the west coast where they lived (Oregon??). Later she moved back to Donaldson, Arkansas after his death to be near her family from the first marriage. She had a small home built largely with lumber salvaged from the old Ward home in Donaldson. She was proud of the beautiful knot less heart of pine lumber salvaged from the old house - "as good as the day it was sawed".

I remember her as warm robust country woman who loved to cook. All the relatives and anybody in the neighborhood was always welcome to be drop in and be fed huge delicious country meals. She always had several kinds of cakes and pies in her kitchen. One never left her house without being stuffed!

I was in medical school in Little Rock when she died. I was asked to be a pall bearer in the funeral. I didn't have a pair of nice black shoes, so borrowed some from Unkle Mose Rutherford. It was a real surprise to me that not only did the pall bearers actually carry the coffin, but we had to fill in the grave after the funeral. It was pouring rain and Unkle Mose's shoes got ruined. -- George L. Mayer
