Notes for Henry Hudson:

INFORMATION FROM THE HUDSONS OF DICKSON COUNTY FROM THE DICKSON COUNTY PAGE from the Tennessee Genweb Page on the internet: This Henry Hudson was the grandfather of the English explorer for whom the Hudson's Bay and Hudson River are named. This was through his oldest son, Henry II. Henry was entitled to be called "gentleman".

From HUDSON FAMILY HISTORY by Van Alan Hudson: TAMWORTH, STAFFORDSHIRE, ENGLAND
1) Gentleman Henry Hudson (abt. 1500 - 1555)
Henry's official title was Gentleman, Alderman of London, Lord of Manors. Henry had gathered considerable wealth in trade and was lord over many manors, some of which were conferred on him by King Henry VIII. The significance of the title Gentleman comes from the aristocracy of ancient England. Gentlemen was a title given to men of certain nobility signifying social position in England. During the 1500's, England was divided into two distinctive classes: the aristocracy (land owners) and the peasants. There was no middle class, so you were either a rich land owner or you were poor. Gentleman Henry Hudson was obviously of the aristocracy demonstrated by his collection of titles and the ownership of a coat of arms that identified the family.

The inscription on Henry's tomb in St. Dunstan's indicates that he had eight sons and three daughters with a wife named Barbara. The LDS Church documents only two of his sons; William and Henry II.

EARLY BEGINNINGS OF THE HUDSON NAME by Van Alan Hudson:
The Hudson name dates back to about 1066 in the county of Yorkshire, England and is traditionally believed to be descendants of the Lords of Hoddleston by European genealogists. The Lords of Hoddleston occupied the castle Millom in Cumberland, on the coast of the Irish sea. After the fall of the Roman Empire, there was fierce rivalry between the Norman's and Saxons over Yorkshire and the area around the Rhine Valley. The battle of Hastings (1066) found the Norman s as conquerors although the early ancestors of the Hudson family remained. Hudde was a common nickname for Richard, as Bob is to Robert, so it appears that the immediate descendants of Sir Richard Hoddleston were known as the sons of Hudde ( Hudson).

Children of Henry Hudson and Barbara are:
1152 i.   William Hudson, born Abt. 1560 in England; died 1630 in England; married Alice Turner Abt. 1603 in London, England per Wft 1826, vol. 9.
ii.   Henry Hudson II, born Abt. 1541 in England*; died in England.
  Notes for Henry Hudson II:
H. H., II was probably a member of the Muscovy Company of Merchant Adventurers founded by the explorer Sebastian Cabot in 1553. He was possibly a co-founder of the company. The Muscovy Company sought a northern route to China and India and ended up exploring the seas off the northern North American continent. A son, Henry Hudson, III ("the Navigator"), became a renowned explorer. - per Van Alan Hudson..
