OBITUARY / RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE LANKENAU HOSPITAL - 1933/34

RESOLUTION

WHEREAS the Board of Trustees of the Lankenau Hospital has learned with deep sorrow of the death, in this Hospital, on December 21, 1933, of HENRY FELCH PAGE, M.D.; and

WHEREAS a life time record of more than forty years of service at Lankenau, commencing with his internship in this institution in May of 1893 and continuing until the very day of his death, when he occupied the position of Medical Superintendent, had made of him an integral part of Lankenau; and

WHEREAS the charm and delight of his friendly personality had in every real sense of the word, endeared Henry Felch Page to the various members of the Lankenau Family, Doctors, Sisters, Nurses, Staff and Trustees alike, resulting in a feeling of personal loss in a friendship that can not in this life be replaced; and

WHEREAS his record, achieved in his chosen profession, command our attention and our admiration -

Henry Felch Page was born on July 12, 1870; a graduate of Phillips Andover Academy, Class of 1890, and of the University of Pennsylvania in Medicine in 1893, his internship at the then German Hospital completed in 1895, Dr. Page became Assistant Physician to this institution, a Chief of its Medical Dispensary, and on September 30, 1902 he was made Acting Medical Superintendent, an office which he held until January 28, 1918, when he was elected Medical Superintendent. In November of 1932 he became Physician in Chief to the Hospital;

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that although no words of ours can adequately express the feeling of personal loss that comes upon us at this time, the Trustees desire that it be recorded upon the Minutes of the Hospital and that Mrs. Page be advised that The Lankenau Hospital, through the death of Henry Felch Page, M.D. has lost from its rolls a much beloved gentleman and an esteemed medical counsellor, whose place will not soon be filled. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

HENRY F. PAGE'S middle name was originally BARNARD, but he legally changed it to FELCH when a cousin, who was the trustee of his inheritance from Alpheus, embezzled the money set aside for Yale undergraduate studies! He had been named for the cousin; whose last name was Barnard.

He was a founding member of the Seidel Science Society ( a philosophical, beer drinking group) that met monthly to discuss world problems. It had many non-medical members, the most distinguished being Owen Roberts, a member of the U. S. Supreme Court.

He served as the principal medical consultant to the internationally prominent surgeon - Dr. John B. Dever.

He was probably the first physician in the greater Philadelphia area to use Liver in the treatment of Pernicious Anemia.

He was an active and key member of the Philadelphia College of Physicians and also taught at the Women's Medical College.

Notes for Nancy Pendleton Nichols:

NANCY PENDLETON (she always retained that name even after being married) NICHOLS, was born the daughter of Captain Edward Payson Nichols (1844-1899), son of William Nichols and the brother of Captain William Green Nichols who in command of the Searsport bark Delphine in 1864 was captured off Java Head by the Confederate raider Shenandoah, all hands were treated civilly and decently.

Nancy circumnavigated the globe three times as a passenger on her father's ships - first the bark Clara(524 tons, built 1867) which was wrecked in a severe storm off Port Elizabeth, Algoa Bay, South Africa in 1881. She escaped in a breeches buoy (along with her sister, Maud)! She later was aboard the ship Frank Pendleton (1414 Tons, built Belfast 1874) where her yoynger sister, Grace was born off the coast of China. She helped her father edit the 'Ocean Chronical', probably the first "sea edited" newspaper. She edited her own little paper titled "Pill Garlic". Lincoln Colcord (of Maine Stein Song fame and for whom sister Grace had unrequited love) described her father as "a man of keen wit, active intelligence, and literacy style of genuine scope and power".

Nancy later taught school in Bucksport where she met Henry, whom she married. They spent long week-ends at Saccarrappa, Toddy Pond.

On moving to Philadelphia, despite the long illness of her husband, she maintained a loving, tight knit family, and succeeded in launching her twin daughters successfully into the social swirl. She became genealogy active using the Pennsylvania Society of Colonial Dames of America as a springboard.

During World War I she organized the Ladies of Hancock County, Maine into a supporters knitting and gardening effort. Her camping contributions consisted of wearing bloomers and sponsoring Lucullus dinners (Lucullus dinner - named after a Roman Emperor who enjoyed liver, kidney, brains, sweet breads, etc.). She was a person of whom her Maine ancestors could be very proud; gracious to the high and mighty and to the low and lonely. ---- recollection of Henry F. Page, MD--Jan 1997
